Anticipates surgeon’s needs by reviewing preference card, procuring appropriate supplies prior to start of case and remaining attentive to the progression of the case. 4. Prepares supplies, room setup and equipment for cases; maintains orderly instrument table and surgical field. 5. Verifies and labels medications and irrigations on the back table with nurse. 6. Maintains and documents accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the nurse. 7. Accurately identifies surgical specimen and transfers to the nurse. 8. Prepares instruments for cleaning and re-sterilization. 9. Assists with putting away supplies and room turnover. 10. Provides leadership for projects at unit level to correct safety/clinical quality deficiencies; lead / implement changes at the unit level. 11. Contributes to maximum efficiency of the surgical line up in order to adhere to surgical start times. 12. Contributes to cost effectiveness by using judgement when opening and using supplies; assists with developing processes to improve cost containment / decrease waste in room. 13. Remains current with new intraoperative techniques and equipment through participation in unit based and continuing education. 14. Serves as a role model to new employees and other staff members; coaches team to anticipate resources; acts as a preceptor to new staff and students. 15. Participates in department projects; assists in the development of policies, procedures and protocols at the department level 16. Accepts responsibilities only within scope of practice. 17. May be required to work at alternate sites. 18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs,” assist with procedures under the supervision of surgeons and RNs, helping ensure quality patient care before, during and after the operative procedure. In this role, you will perform a variety of tasks, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, passing instruments to the surgeon and sterilizing instruments after procedures. This position offers a unique way to gain hands-on experience in an operative environment while making a lasting difference in the lives of patients and caregivers every day. Ultimately, surgery could not be possible without your support. A caregiver in this position works varying days from 6:30AM – 7:00PM or 7:00AM – 3:30PM, with on-call requirements. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available. Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery. Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.” Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition. Job Summary and Qualifications The Surgical Technologist, in collaboration with the surgical team and under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, assumes responsibility for the care and safety of the perioperative patient, instrumentation, supplies, and equipment during surgical and other invasive and non-invasive procedures. The Surgical Technologist ensures effective communication with the circulator, the surgeon, the patient and their family, as well as the other members of the surgical team.
