Miami, FL On Call/Pool JW-Operating Room Summary PRN Operating Room Technician 2 perform specialized work in assisting in the performance of complex surgical procedures in hospital operating rooms. Employees in this classification are responsible for preparation of operating rooms for surgical procedures; maintaining operational readiness of specialized equipment; serves as maintenance of operating room instruments and equipment following surgery. Responsibilities Uses a systematic process to provide/modify care and patient/family education. Assists in the inspection and indicated cleaning of the room prior to the procedure. Assists in collection of necessary equipment and supplies utilizing the surgeons procedure card. Maintains aseptic technique throughout all phases of work. Assembles instruments and supplies on table and mayo stand. Performs counts with the circulating nurse. Assists in the draping of the operative site. Assists surgeon and scrub nurse; anticipates and supplies the needs of the surgeon with instruments, sutures and sponges throughout the procedure. Assumes responsibility for the identification and maintenance of specimens after release from the surgeon until release to the circulating nurse. Identifies medications on sterile table according to policy and procedure. Utilizes safety measures for patient, self and other team members in the handling of sharps, cautery and other equipment. Assists, when necessary, in the transfer of patient to recovery room bed. Assists in the total clean-up and readiness of the room for another procedure. Performs Unit specific duties. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned. Experience Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience. Education High School diploma is required. Skill Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the clinical area. Credentials Operating Room Technician certification preferred. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment. Unit Specific Credential Working Conditions Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. The Surgical Technologist II acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures in all areas, including a variety of complex procedures, by assisting the surgeon with instrumentation. Provides information related to care/preparation of surgical instruments/equipment for sterilization/disinfection procedures. Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision. Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case. Assures all materials are available and in working order and verifies own skill in using equipment correctly. Provides indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation. Assist with standard work and cleaning at completion of procedure. Maintains aseptic technique; actively monitors situations that could lead to a breach in aseptic technique. Communicates and immediately corrects breaks in aseptic technique. Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems. Tests equipment prior to use on field. Adheres to the LPCHS unit policies regarding equipment maintenance. Assists with restraining uncooperative/combative patient in a safe manner. Serves as a role model for Surgical Tech I. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying. Education: Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program (e.g., military services). This is a regular PRN position, with caregivers working various day/evening/night/weekend shifts from 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. with on-call availability. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Provide quality, individualized patient care in the perioperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases. Follow guidelines for perioperative practices as established by AORN. Maintain the sterile field and assist with draping the sterile field. Assemble, check and open sterile packs, sutures and more. Practice and assist others in maintaining aseptic technique and report and/or correct any breaks. Comply with required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting and side-site verification. Remain with the sterile setup to assure maintenance of the sterile field. Collect specimens as directed by the surgeon and identify the origin of each specimen to the RN Circulator. Assist surgeons and assistants with retraction and suction as directed. Assure that all biohazard material is handled and disposed of properly using universal precautions. Keep accurate counts of all sutures, sharps, soft goods and instruments. Assure that all instrumentation is returned to decontamination with proper documentation count sheets. Attend Department Meetings and complete mandatory education/organizational requirements.
