We are accepting applications for a per diem/Pool Surgical Tech II to work variable shifts 0700-1930 or 1900-0730. Pool requirements are 36 hours a month for minimum hours commitment, occasional weekends, 2 holidays a year.

CST highly preferred.

$28.05 - $42.10

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides for a clean, safe and efficient area conducive to optimal patient care. Utilizes aseptic surgical techniques in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures

  • Performs all types of procedures and maintains advanced knowledge of a variety of procedures. Specializes in a surgical specialty area, where applicable, serving as a resource to others and assisting with complex surgical cases.

  • Ensures the environmental disinfection, safety and efficiency of the operating room. This includes setting up the room for each case including moving equipment (i.e., tables, cameras, microscopes, fracture table, and instrument pans), operating the various types of equipment used during operating room procedures, and returning equipment post procedure.

  • Notifies appropriate staff of equipment and supply problems.

  • Transports patients and/or equipment and supplies.

  • Maintains a specialty cart or item, ensuring its completeness and availability. This includes checking the working condition of equipment, sterility, and sending damaged items out for repair.

  • Acts as a resource and precepts Surgical Technologists I and/or participates in department or facility committees or work teams.

  • Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.

  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.


Education Required:

  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Surgical Technology.


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in a Surgical Technologist position.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Completion of a suturing class approved by supervisor.

  • Proficient in all surgical specialties with expertise in a minimum of two.

  • Advanced knowledge and skill of aseptic surgical techniques used in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for various surgical procedures and suturing.

  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and recognize physician's needs and changes that require unplanned or unanticipated interventions and respond appropriately.

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

  • Basic computer proficiency.

Duties To Include Prepares surgical area for patient care and anticipates the needs of the surgical team Serves as primary preceptor for Surgical Technology students, Summer 10 Nursing Interns or new staff Serves on shared governance committee, POD committee or EBP workgroup Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room Understands the principles of medical and surgical asepsis; recognizes and communicates breaks in aseptic technique Provides for proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies and implants (E/I/S/I) Understand the various surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation in order to anticipate needs during surgery to improve the overall flow of the surgical procedure Competent in performance of delegated technical functions and clinical activities, in accordance with institutional policy Facilitate patient care with regard to the patient's condition and age High level of collaboration with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care with responsibility over maintaining the sterile field and reporting incidence to surgeon Participates in collaborative review of pertinent patient information for accuracy of procedure and associated factors influencing preparedness for procedure Assist to revise or update care plans and develop new care plans for new procedures or surgeons Organize and review instrument trays and supply shelves Organize and maintain trial or specialty equipment, supplies, or instrument items Displays critical thinking skills and anticipates the needs of the patient and surgeon Takes preventative action on potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents Provides documentation according to department/division standard in conjunction with the Registered Nurse Performs computer functions within scope of role as defined by the individual unit or units supported Precepts new staff and/or student technologists to scrubbing duties Mentors’ new employees and other surgical team members Practices standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy Follows changes in patient care protocol based on research findings Participates in and contributes to unit staff meetings and in-service programs Participates in perioperative initiatives or shared governance committees Performs other special projects and tasks as assigned Ensures daily unit documentation/tasks are completed such as case reviews for procedure, implants and supplies. Communicates with surgeons regarding implants, instruments or supplies for future cases Organize/Revise specialty carts, care plans or service line information Organize and provide specialty in-services. Percent of Time: 90% Schedule: Four 9-hour shifts per week primarily Monday-Friday 0700-1630 with rotating day off each week. On-call rotation for nights and weekends. Holiday rotation. Minimum Eligibility Requirements For Surgical Technologist II Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA and NCCT). Two years' experience as a Surgical Technologist Desirable Qualifications Preferred candidates will have direct patient care experience in an operating room. Experience working in a healthcare environment. Ability to scrub surgical procedures.
