The Surgical Technologist and/or the Certified Surgical Technologist prepares the room and gathers supplies needed for surgical procedures; delivers instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other members of the surgical team intra operatively; may function as second assistant to the surgeon; assists in the proper decontamination of the room, supplies and instruments post operatively. Responsibilities And Duties: 40% Prepares for surgical cases by obtaining and preparing appropriate supplies, equipment and instruments, reviews surgeon's preferences to determine required items. Establishes and maintains a sterile field and presents instruments to the operating team. Delivers appropriate instruments/supplies utilizing proper principles of sterile technique. Acts as 2nd assistant to surgeon, performing duties related to draping and operative site exposure. Responsible for removal of all sharps and initials return card for verification. Can hold extremities. Assist with casting and splinting. Mixes medications on the sterile field once verification by a registered nurse has occurred. Assist with positioning, can fix specimens in formalin (annual competency required), assists circulator in proper care and handling of surgical specimens. Can wash and thaw grafts, can hold a stapler while surgeon fires it, can operate skin stapler for the purpose of wound approximation and can assist with the dislocation of joints if yearly competency is accomplished. Can cut suture material as directed by and under the supervision of a surgeon, Can apply ESU to clamps or forceps for hemostasis under the direct supervision of the surgeon, can assist anesthesia if yearly competency is accomplished, Can assist with patient skin prep if yearly competency is accomplished, Can change out camera and robotic instruments during endoscopic procedures under the direct supervision of the surgeon, Can manipulate the uterus during robotic cases under the direct supervision of the surgeon. 40% Equipment and Supply Maintenance: Assists in post-procedure cleaning of the OR/equipment, returns equipment/supplies to proper areas; assists in room re-stocking. May run dart/biologics for sterilizers (annual competency required), reports any damaged equipment appropriately, mops floor between cases, and ensures that all equipment cords are not frayed and free from cuts as well as other duties as assigned. 20% Unit Operations: Participates in unit operations to contribute to efficiency of department, effective communication, quality care, personal growth as well as development, training, and orientation of new personnel. Job Summary and Qualifications Position Summary: The Certified Surgical Technologist delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing various functions to support the efficient operation of the surgical suite. Under the supervision of the Circulating RN, the Certified Surgical Technologist prepares the surgical suite, positions and prepares the patient, and provides instruments, equipment, and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure. The Certified Surgical Technologist ensures a sterile field, proper instrument counts, and proper operation of instruments and equipment. The Certified Surgical Technologist participates in patient-specific care as directed and follows service excellence standards to promote optimum patient satisfaction. Major Responsibilities: Organizes the operating suite with instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the day. Reviews daily cases to ensure adequate stocking. Ensures proper functioning of equipment/instruments prior to procedures. Creates and maintains an orderly sterile instrument table. Utilizes physician preference cards for efficient setup. Prepares for emergency and add on cases rapidly and effectively. Transports patients to and from surgical suite as needed. Assists in the transfer, positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures in accordance with hospital standards. Performs and/or assists in scrub/gown/glove process for self and team. Assists the surgeon during each procedure by passing requested/required equipment, instruments, medications, sponges, sutures, etc.. Performs other duties as instructed, such as holding retractors and cutting sutures. Anticipates situations and functions with a proactive awareness to help the surgical team maintain attention on the operative field. Monitors the patient and any equipment in use to identify issues requiring immediate action. Reports and/or responds calmly and efficiently. Assists in the maintenance and care of surgical specimens. Handles surgical specimens according to hospital policy. Follows department procedures for proper procurement, labeling, and handling of medications, I.V. fluids, and irrigating fluids in the surgical services area. Operates specialty equipment per manufacturer’s recommendations and policy/procedures. Completes all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports all discrepancies to the nurse or surgeon. Performs thorough, prompt room turnover between procedures, including cleaning, restocking of supplies, and setup/cleaning/removal of equipment and instrumentation as needed. Participates in patient and procedural verification. Responds to lifesaving situations, including fire and disaster situations. Responds promptly to on-call situations as scheduled. Helps maintain a safe, organized environment for personnel and patients. Demonstrates commitment to patient safety initiatives including patient falls and restraints. Ensures patient privacy and comfort. Maintains confidentiality of patient information and records, and advocates for patient rights as needed. Applies the principles of asepsis to ensure the prevention of infection and maintain optimum patient care. Follows universal precautions as required by hospital and OSHA policies. Demonstrates effective communication skills when interacting with patients, family members, physicians, and coworkers. Utilizes appropriate chains of command to communicate pertinent information. Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues. Maintains knowledge of surgical specialties and ability to scrub for multiple types of procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of procedure-related anatomy and physiology. Position Summary The role of Materials Manager reports to the Surgery Financial Manager. This position is responsible for managing all supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical services at Washington Regional Physicians’ Specialty Hospital (the “PSH”), which includes ordering, receiving, storing, and distributing items. This position is responsible for maintaining optimal inventory levels, using inventory management software, verifying charges, assisting with equipment repair, and coordinating with clinical staff and vendors to ensure all necessary materials are available for surgical procedures. Essential Position Responsibilities Order, receive, store, and distribute surgical supplies, implants, and equipment. Use inventory tools like automated units, handheld devices, and ERP systems for perpetual inventory and data entry. Ensure the correct supplies and equipment are available for each surgical case by reviewing the schedule and coordinating with vendors. Accurately track and verify patient charges for used supplies, including tracking serial numbers for implants. Oversee inventory vitality by forecasting inventory needs and assisting with managing the budget, identifying cost increases, participating in product standardization, monitoring for product expiration, and ensuring that product is rotated effectively. Assist with equipment maintenance, repair, and recalls, including setting up new equipment and coordinating loaner equipment or repairs. Achieve financial objectives by assisting in annual budget prep, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions in partnership with the financial manager and surgery leadership. Facilitate off-site pickup and delivery of sensitive documents, recyclable materials, soiled linens, and non-regulated medical waste requiring the proper use of personal protective equipment while ensuring accurate and detailed documentation is maintained as necessary. Maintain knowledge of interdepartmental software systems. Assist in stocking supplies. Follow all hospital and regulatory guidelines, such as those from the FDA and AABB, and maintain logs and databases as required. Qualifications Education: Graduate from an accredited CST or LPN program. Licensure and Certifications: CST or LPN, required. Driver’s license and auto liability insurance, required. Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare environment with purchasing, procurement, materials management, inventory control, or revenue cycle, preferred. Work Environment : This position will spend approximately 60% of the time standing and/or walking while pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or carrying up to 50 lbs. and 40% of time sitting while performing work in a standard office environment. Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card. Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse. Performs scrub assistance for all procedures. Assists the circulating nurse with implementing a plan of care to include positioning, confirmation of operative site, updating physician preference cards, care of specimens, and room turnover. Accounts for instruments, trays, implants, before during and after the case. Begins Sterilizing process while in the surgical suite by counting for completeness of tray, initiating cleansing/sterilizing process. Monitors and accesses supplies in medication storage areas including needles and syringes.
