Kansas Nursing License Renewal Requirements

Kansas RN license renewal, as well as renewals for LPNs and NPs, is managed by the Kansas Board of Nursing. CNA registry status is run by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

Nurses without a Kansas or NLC license will need to obtain a license by endorsement to work within the state. If you are a nurse already working in Kansas, the following steps will show you what you need to do to renew your credentials.

Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline

The first step is knowing when to renew. Your initial LPN and RN license lasts for 30 months in Kansas. After that, you must renew it every two years to remain active. It expires on the last day of your birth month, in odd or even years, depending on your birth year. You must wait until you’re within 90 days of the expiration date to renew your license.

What about APRN renewals? If you’re a newly licensed NP, print out the paper “License Renewal Application” and mail it to the board. This will ensure that your RN and APRN renewal dates will be in sync. If you’re renewing as an NP, your advanced practice license will automatically renew along with your RN license.

Kansas does not allow a grace period for late renewals. If the application is even a day late, the applicant must reinstate their license. In this case, you must fill out a reinstatement application and send it to the Kansas BON. Both RNs and LPNs must pay a $150 fee to reinstate a license.

Step 2: Satisfy Continuing Education Requirements

RNs and LPNs must complete 30 hours of board-approved continuing education prior to submitting their application for renewal. First-time licensees are exempt from this requirement. If you haven’t completed this requirement, but your renewal is approaching, you can apply for a temporary permit. You’re able to work with this permit while you complete the remainder of your continuing education.

Not sure where to find CEUs? On top of the continuing education courses displayed on the Kansas Board of Nursing website, you can browse courses from IntelyEdu, which is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

CNAs must work for at least one paid and documented eight-hour day over the past 24 months to maintain their place on the Kansas CNA registry. This requirement is verified through the employment verification form, which you’ll need to fill out with your employer to complete your Kansas CNA renewal application.

Step 3: Complete Your Kansas Board of Nursing License Renewal Online

When you’re ready, log in to the Kansas Nursing License Portal to start your online application. Depending on your license type, you’ll need to submit a fee alongside your renewal information:

  • RN and LPN biennial renewals: $85
  • APRN and nurse anesthetist biennial renewals: $55

Once your application is submitted, you should receive a notice of renewal in the mail. Wondering how you can verify a nursing license? Kansas provides an app and website for license verification, where you can view your active license.
