Intely@Sea SME Profile – Reta Underwood

Intely@Sea is a five-day cruise out of Miami, Florida to the Bahamas, taking place May 9 – 13, 2022 in honor of Nursing Professionals Week! We are so excited to be a part of this celebration. It is going to be a trip to remember!

Joining us on the cruise will be prominent nursing professionals and leaders in the nursing world. Some of them will be teaching courses on board for CEU credits. Each of them will be available to network and share their stories with you!

Meet Reta Underwood

Reta A. Underwood, RAC-CT, C-NM, QCP, CPC has over 34 years of professional work experience in the long-term care industry. Reta’s experience has included management and director positions with nursing facilities and health care companies. She has also provided corporate-wide MDS support services, numerous mock surveys, regulatory compliance correction, educational programs, clinical documentation, quality assurance programming, and most recently implemented PDPM in facilities nationwide.  

Reta has supplied input to CMS and has been included on projects and discussions pertaining to post- acute care. She holds national certifications through the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination (AANAC) as a Resident Assessment Coordinator (RAC-CT); Quality (QAPI) Professional and Nurse Manager, and is an ICD-10-CM coder.  

Reta has had numerous articles published in the long-term care industry trade publications and has been used as an expert resource professional for media interviews including McKnight’s News; HCPro MDS and PPS Advisor and Provider AHCA magazine. She has also copyrighted several clinical documentation forms and tools, such as for Medicare Triple Check Process, nutritional assessment, skilled clinical and MDS documentation, and restorative nursing programming.  

Reta will be teaching a course on board Intely@Sea covering the RAI Process and MDS Assessment. 

She will also be a part of healing and wellness water ceremonies that will be taking place over the course of three sessions during the cruise week.

IntelyCare: What does Nursing Professionals Week mean to you? 

Reta: “Nursing Professionals Week is a time to show appreciation and praise those who care for others.” 

IntelyCare: What does education mean to you? 

Reta: “Education is about gaining insight and understanding.” 

IntelyCare: What do you think everyone should understand about what it means to be a nurse? 

Reta: “Everyone should know that that not everyone can do the job or do it well. It takes a special kind of person to care for others.” 

IntelyCare: What do you think every nurse should understand about the importance of self-care? 

Reta: “How well you care for yourself demonstrates how well you can care for others.” 

IntelyCare: Is there anything else you would like to share? 

Reta: “Nursing involves more than those who pass medications or dress a wound. It takes a TEAM to truly take care of a person in need. For example, without the dietary aide or the maintenance tech, many important items of patient care could not be provided.”
