A Brief Overview The Surgical Technologist I is an integral member of the surgical team. The Technologist I works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse/Circulating Nurse. Handles all “sharps” in a safe and protective manner in consideration of self and others in supportive roles, such as Core Techs, environmental services, and CPD staff. Participates in “time-outs” prior to the start of surgical procedures according to hospital policy guidelines. Verifies medications, concentrations, expiration dates of all medications received on the sterile field in concert with the circulating RN. Handles and dispenses medications, irrigation solutions, and flushes (e.g. epi: 1:1000, local anesthetics, antibiotic irrigation) to surgeon within the sterile field.
