Major Responsibilities

Possesses a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique and its application.
Assists in obtaining and organizing supplies and instruments prior, during and after surgical procedure.
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
Assists Registered Nurse circulator in preparation of patient, assembly of supplies, instruments, equipment, and proper disposition of all specimens; assists with all aspects of room turnover.
Assigned to heightened specialized procedures: neurosurgery and spine, cardiothoracic, vascular, complex orthopedics, and robotics.
Performs duties according to department policy and procedure.
Monitors surgical supplies and instrumentation for sterility prior to use and ensures that supplies are used in a judicious manner, charges are documented/submitted accurately and appropriately.
Monitors and documents sterilization activities for completion.
Attends in-services/staff meetings; exhibits knowledge of current department related issues and participates in Performance Improvement Process.
Participates in educational opportunities to increase competency and meet personal needs and goals.
Assists in the development of policies, procedures, and standards.

Minimum Job Requirements EducationGraduate of an accredited school of surgical technology required or successful completion of military training program for Surgical Technology or Operating Room Specialist.Certification / LicenseCurrent Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider required. Essential Functions Prepares the operating room by reviewing case cart and supplying it with supplies and instruments to provide appropriate patient care Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedure according to the physician’s preferences and the procedure Inspects equipment for proper working condition Maintain sterile practices when opening packages and preparing for the procedure Prepare for specialty cases and maintain up-to-date knowledge of advancements and techniques. Participate in time out/sign out processes Maintains the sterile field during the procedure. Follow principles of aseptic technique and appropriate operating/procedure room procedures following AORN guidelines. Scrubs to assist the surgeon in the completion of surgical procedures by demonstrating a working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment needed for a variety of procedures. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner, as directed by the surgeon Practices sharps safety techniques (safety zone, safe passing) Performs appropriate counts prior to the operation and before incision is closed Prepares and labels fluids and medications on the sterile field Prepares specimens for pathologic analysis Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization Assists operating room team with environmental cleaning and case turnovers Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure. Store and stock supplies as needed Updates preference cards following each procedure to ensure appropriate supplies are available and communicates to service lead Assist with OR patient care processes as directed by nursing and anesthesia Participates in assigned on call activities. Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job. Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section Education Qualifications Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technologist OR applicable surgical technologist course of study Required Experience Qualifications Minimum 2 years of experience working as a Surgical Technologist and competency in scrubbing in 2 or more surgical specialties as a Surgical Technologist. Candidates with the Surgical Technologist certification fulfill this requirement without the experience.
