Fort Belvoir is a United States Army base located on 8,656 acres along the Potomac River in Fairfax County, VA. It encompasses a population of 47,000 and is well-positioned a mere 12 miles south of Washington, DC. A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center is a Department of Defense medical facility located on Fort Belvoir, Virginia, outside of Washington D.C. In conjunction with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Belvoir provides the Military Health System medical capabilities of the National Capital Region Medical Directorate (NCR MD), a joint unit providing comprehensive care to members of the United States Armed Forces located in the capital area, and their families. The facility is located on a U.S. Army installation but operates as one of the first joint service medical facilities in the U.S. military, staffed with uniformed medical personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The hospital is one of the largest medical facilities in Northern Virginia and provides all levels of inpatient and outpatient medical care. The Surgical Technologist III is involved in process improvement or quality initiatives within Perioperative Services. All shifts include an uncompensated 30-to-60-minute meal break, respectively. Job Specific Responsibilities and Tasks: Duties may include but are not limited to : Core Duties: • Perform the full spectrum of sterile techniques, setting up surgical trays, preparing and draping patients for surgery, and assisting with post-operative dressings.• Ensure surgical packs are cleaned and packed for sterilization after every procedure, to include restocking surgical supplies.• Maintain a clean, safe environment for the patient either by active participation in the cleaning of clinical spaces, operating rooms, and medical equipment, or by guiding other personnel in the environmental maintenance. Additional Duties: • Perform a full range of surgical/operating room technician services to include performance as a scrub technician; pass instruments to surgeon and/or surgical assistants; assist circulating nurse to prepare patients for surgery and assists in preparation of patient’s operative site; assist the anesthesiologist; adjust lights and other equipment as directed; verify proper identification of patients and scheduled surgical procedure; review to ensure appropriate consent forms are complete; assist in positioning patient in prescribed position for surgery; and assist as directed in moving patient to and from the surgery site. • Count (with the circulating nurse) sponges, needles and instruments used during surgery and assist in clean-up of operating room using standard MTF policies. • Prepare operative specimens as directed, label and deliver them to the laboratory and move equipment to and from operating rooms as necessary for scheduled procedures. • Provide pick-up and delivery service for such items as blood gasses, supplies, specimens, and materials to support Operating Room needs. • Conduct inventory; determine need; orders, obtains, receives, and stores surgical supplies; and inspect and monitor stocking of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) crash cart. • Respond to CPR situations, acute respiratory problems and other emergencies as needed. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications : • Degree: Certificate • Education: Graduate from Surgical Technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or completion of a formal training program provided by any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force) for surgical technicians, surgical technologists or operating room technicians. • Certification: Certified as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or certified as a Tech-in-Surgery (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or possess a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) certification as a surgical technician and/or operating room technician. • Experience :the HCW will possess a minimum of 1 year of full-time experience as a Surgical Technologist within the preceding 2 years, including experience assisting Main Operating Room surgeons (to include but not limited to OB/GYN, Orthopedic, Pediatric, and Urology). * Security : Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance. * Life Support Certification: Possess a current AHA OR ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification. Responsibilities Position reports to the Manager or designee. Perform various duties including but not limited to: provide assistance to surgical team during the intra-operative phase, provide aseptic, safe, appropriately equipped and functional surgical environment. Responsible for OR preparation, instrument supply and assembly, maintenance of sterile fields, hands off instruments and initiation of counts throughout procedures. Perform Surgical Technologist duties including on-call duties as need or required. Qualifications Equal to completion of 4 years of high school plus additional specialized courses or training is required. Graduation from an approved Surgical Technology Program is required. Certified Surgical Technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized surgical technologist certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologist is required. Certification in Basic Life Support is required. One (1) year of Surgical Technologist experience is required. Pay Range USD $55.00 - USD $55.00 /Hr.
