Work Schedule:

Monday through Friday 9 hours shift; 1 hour unpaid lunch period

SPECIFIC TASKS AND REQUIREMENTS: The type of work may include, but is not limited to, the following:

• Provides surgical patient care activities.• Transports patients, and related records to and from the OR and recovery room. Assists nursing staff with preoperative patient preparation activities.• Helps with routing medical materiel management activities.• Accomplishes routine safety checks and operator preventive maintenance on fixed and moveable medical equipment and fixtures.• Performs routine and specialized housekeeping activities.• Prepares OR for surgery by setting up and opening sterile supplies and instruments.• Assists anesthesia personnel with patient positioning and anesthesia administration.• Applies principles of asepsis, infection control, and medical ethics.• Assists with terminal cleanup of OR and prepares for follow-up procedures.• Receives, decontaminates, and cleans soiled patient care items.• Manages instrument sets, supplies, and linen packs. Stores, maintains, and distributes sterile patient care items.• Assists the circulating nurse with preparing records, reports, and requests.• Confirms preoperative case cart accuracy. Manages and maintains preference cards accuracy. Prepares specimens for transport to the laboratory.• Performs scrub duties in the Operating Room. Scrubs hands and arms and dons sterile gown and gloves. Prepares and maintains sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment of draped tables and stands. Counts sponges, needles, instruments, and related items with circulating nurse before, during, and after surgical procedures.• Assists the operative team with applying sterile drapes to the surgical field. Passes instruments, sutures, and other supplies to the sterile operative team. Anticipates surgeon’s needs, and provides additional assistance as directed. Cares for surgical specimens on the sterile field. Cleans and prepares instruments and reusable supplies for terminal sterilization and decontamination.• Performs recovery room or basic nursing duties. Assists surgeon and nursing staff with post-operative care as deemed appropriate by surgeon. Administers oxygen, helps arouse patient, and carries out surgeon’s post- operative orders. Assists with identifying and managing of postoperative complications. Provides post-operative instructions and paperwork for patient.• Performs general clinic functions. Prepares patients, instruments, supplies, and equipment for specialized procedures in the OR and specialty clinics. Assists specialty surgeon during surgical and diagnostic procedures. Assembles, operates, and maintains diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Orders diagnostic laboratory and radiographic procedures as directed. Performs activities unique to specific surgical clinics. Schedules clinic appointments and Surgeries. Prepares preoperative paperwork.• Attends in-service training in new procedures, techniques, and equipment.• Ensures a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

* Education: Graduate from a Surgical Technology Program recognized and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

* Experience: Have at least 12 months of experience within the last 36 months as a surgical services technician.

* License or certificate: Completion of an accredited surgical service and clinical course.

* Life Support Certifications: Possess ARC or AHA BLS certification.

* Security: Must be able to pass a Government background check and obtain a Government security clearance.

Additional Duties: • Perform a full range of surgical/operating room technician services to include performance as a scrub technician; pass instruments to surgeon and/or surgical assistants; assist circulating nurse to prepare patients for surgery and assists in preparation of patient’s operative site; assist the anesthesiologist; adjust lights and other equipment as directed; verify proper identification of patients and scheduled surgical procedure; review to ensure appropriate consent forms are complete; assist in positioning patient in prescribed position for surgery; and assist as directed in moving patient to and from the surgery site. • Count (with the circulating nurse) sponges, needles and instruments used during surgery and assist in clean-up of operating room using standard MTF policies. • Prepare operative specimens as directed, label and deliver them to the laboratory and move equipment to and from operating rooms as necessary for scheduled procedures. • Provide pick-up and delivery service for such items as blood gasses, supplies, specimens, and materials to support Operating Room needs. • Conduct inventory; determine need; orders, obtains, receives, and stores surgical supplies; and inspect and monitor stocking of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) crash cart. • Respond to CPR situations, acute respiratory problems and other emergencies as needed.
