Job Summary and Qualifications Position Summary: This position supports the mission of Presbyterian/St Luke’s Medical Center of optimizing the quality of life of all those served by expanding beyond the traditional focus on medical needs to the needs of the whole person. The Surgical Technician III will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide assistance during the surgical procedures performed in the department in the scrub role. The Surgical Technician III is experienced in all aspects of aseptic technique, setting up the required equipment and sterile supplies as needed for their assigned cases; pulling cases as needed, breaking down cases at the end of the procedure, sets up operating room and supplies needed for day/following day’s schedule. He/she is knowledgeable regarding instrumentation, equipment and supply needs for all types of surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician III must be competent as a Surgical Technician II, demonstrating basic to advanced knowledge and skills in the scrub role, in multiple surgical specialties performed in the department (i.e. Revision Total Joints, Ophthalmology/Retinal, Complex Vascular, Complex spines with instrumentation, Pediatrics, Major Orthopedics, Free Flaps/Limb Preservation procedures, Craniofacial procedures and Cardiac). He/she acts as a preceptor, resource and mentor for new staff members, surgical technician students and existing staff. He/she is available for call on an assigned/scheduled basis as required by unit need. Purpose of Position: Works under the supervision of the Manager and Surgeon helping to facilitate a safe, effective and orderly operating room in order to maximize the patient’s safety. Description Prepares the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes and sterile solutions. Scrub arms and hands and assist the surgical team to scrub and put on gloves, masks, and surgical clothing. During surgery passes instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeon and surgeon’s assistants. Holds retractors, cuts sutures, passes needles, supplies and instruments. Counts sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation. Prepares, cares for, and disposes of specimens taken for laboratory analysis. Utilizes preference cards to ensure appropriate instrumentation and equipment Assists in transporting patients to the Operating Room and helps position patients on the Operating Room table. Understands and uses the appropriate sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments. May operate sterilizers, adjust lights, suction, and help with diagnostic equipment. Under the direction of the surgeon and Registered Nurse, accurately and safely prepares and labels medications during the “surgical procedure.” Assists in transferring patients to the recovery area. May assist in turnover and restocking the operating room for the next surgical procedure. Assumes responsibility for orientation of new Operating Room employees, as required. Essential Job Responsibilities: Complies with hospital/departmental policies and procedures, i.e., attendance, mandatory education, safety, infection control, etc. Performs patient care within the scope of training of the OR technician and under the direction of the RN. Respects patient’s rights by maintaining patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality. Demonstrates ICARE standards at all times . Can recognize and respond appropriately in an emergency situation. Attends unit specific education sessions. Attends 80% of all mandatory meetings and in-services. Reading and reviewing emails and other department communication . Demonstrates knowledge of the step-by-step positioning of the patient on the OR table. Maintains a clean OR suite for the surgical patients. Maintains a safe environment for the surgical patients by checking the conditions and cleanliness of equipment before procedure. Demonstrates working knowledge of the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for all cases. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating manuals, and maintenance manuals . Performs intra-operative management of assigned procedures. Initiates and maintains a sterile field throughout surgical procedures by adhering to the principles of asepsis. Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately at all times and monitors other staff for compliance. Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative site. Anticipates needs of surgeon. Assists the circulating nurse in maintaining correct needle, sponge, and instrument counts. Appropriately handles all specimens. Demonstrates knowledge of and correct procedure in managing patient with system specific procedures. Assumes responsibility for supply and equipment management appropriate to position and in compliance with department standard.
