Franciscan Health Crown Point 12750 S Francis Dr Crown Point, Indiana 46307 The Surgical Technologist performs various tasks supporting perioperative services, including preparation of operating room, transport of patients, supplies, equipment, and specimens. This position assists surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other members of an operating room team by preparing patients for their procedures, sterilizing equipment, and maintaining environmental cleanliness before, during and after surgical procedures. This position, also, provides technical assistance to surgeons by anticipating and passing instruments, assuring the functioning of instruments, and keeping instruments free of debris during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and other solutions. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT Post-Procedure Clean Up Assists in the clean up of surgical environment after a procedure, ensuring the operating room is cleaned and set up for turnover to the next procedure. Removes equipment from surgery room and follows proper procedure to dispose of contaminated equipment and supplies. Handles and disposes of sharps, biohazardous waste, regular trash, and contaminated linens according to procedures and policies. Transport Assists in transporting patients, as required. Specimens Assists with handling specimens in accordance with unit policy and procedure, as required. Counts and Circulating Maintains awareness of items that require counts and assists the circulating nurse with the count process. Surgical Assistance Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure. Patient and Site Verification Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out the procedure to ensure correct patient and site. Surgical Instrument Prep Prepares for surgical procedures by obtaining appropriate instruments, supplies and equipment and appropriate records for specific surgical procedures; opens surgical supplies/equipment, cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization process and restocks pre-operative carts. Environment Safety Provides a safe procedural environment by recognizing and responding to life-threatening situations. Surgical Scrub Scrubs basic surgical and some complex procedures for general, orthopedic, ob/gyn, genitourinary, otorhinolaryngology, neurosurgical procedures, and other surgical procedures. Utilizes aseptic surgical techniques in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures (e.g., assistance with gowning and gloving; preparation and draping of the surgical area; provision of a sterile field, instruments, suture and related materials; anticipation of the Surgeons' needs; passing of instruments and/or supplies; holding of retractors, observing and reporting possible breaks in aseptic technique; and assisting in maintaining a sterile, dry, unobstructed field). Performs all types of procedures and maintains basic knowledge of a variety of procedures. Ensures the environmental disinfection, safety and efficiency of the operating room. This includes setting up the room for each case including moving equipment (i.e., tables, cameras, microscopes, fracture table, and instrument pans), operating the various types of equipment used during operating room procedures, and returning equipment post procedure. Functions as a Second Assistant as necessary. Notifies appropriate staff of equipment and supply problems. Transports patients and/or equipment and supplies. Maintains a specialty cart or item, ensuring its completeness and availability. This includes checking the working condition of equipment, sterility, and sending damaged items out for repair. Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
