Overview The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in Cardiovascular Surgery plays an integral role in the comprehensive care of adult cardiothoracic surgical patients. This provider works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality perioperative care. Responsibilities include inpatient rounding, first assisting in the operating room, managing pre‑ and postoperative patients, and participating in call coverage. Overview: Serve as first assist in cardiovascular surgical procedures, including CABG, valve surgery, aortic procedures, and other cardiothoracic operations. Perform surgical tasks such as vein harvesting, suturing, retraction, cannulation assistance, and hemostasis. Support preoperative preparation and postoperative handoff to ICU teams. Perform daily rounds on postoperative and step‑down patients. Manage routine and complex postoperative issues, including hemodynamic monitoring, chest tube management, wound care, and medication adjustments. Order and interpret diagnostic tests, labs, imaging, and consults. Coordinate patient care with nursing, case management, rehabilitation, and other specialties. Participate in shared call rotation and support OR call needs.
