ER Nurse Practitioner Jobs: Education, Certification, and Skills

NPs are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who, unlike RNs and other nursing professionals, are authorized to diagnose health conditions, prescribe medications, and order diagnostic tests. To become a nurse practitioner, first you’ll need to work for a year or two as an RN before applying for an APRN program. If you haven’t already worked in the ER as an RN, it’s a good idea to seek out this experience before you commit to this next step in your career.

Then, you’ll pursue either a master of science in nursing (MSN) or a doctorate of nursing practice (DNP). It takes about a year or two to complete an MSN program, while a DNP can take up to six years. The main difference between the two paths is that those who earn a DNP typically receive higher pay and may have more access to leadership and administrative roles.

After you’ve earned your MSN or DNP, you need to become certified from a nationally accredited certifying body such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the National Certification Corporation (NCC). After passing the exam, you’ll apply for a state license. In this position, you will practice in an advanced role to provide developmentally appropriate and age-appropriate health maintenance for well children, episodic care for ill children, and comprehensive care for children with chronic conditions. Responsibilities: Conducts detailed medical histories, performs thorough physical examinations, initiates laboratory and/or radiographic workups, interprets aforementioned workup results, develops treatment plans, and decide upon appropriate disposition options of acute medical complaints in the emergency setting. Must be able to work autonomously but under the overall supervision of a with collaborating physician. Performs and interprets, at least to the point of recognizing deviations from normal, common laboratory, radiologic, cardiologic and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiologic processes as privileged by CCF Credentialing Board. Performs routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, incision and drainage, managing simple conditions produced by infection or trauma, assisting in the management of more complex illness and injury. May be expected to perform special non-core privileges including lumbar puncture, central venous line placement, thoracostomy with chest tube placement, and arthrocentesis following approval by CCF Credentialing Board. Provides detailed patient education regarding their disease state, including etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, prognosis, follow up care. Participates in medical team rounds; collaborates with nursing, medical and other healthcare team members regularly to ensure quality patient care. Refers patients to specialists as appropriate for consultation or for specialized health resources and treatment. Must be able to perform in a multidisciplinary team, including consultations with specialty providers. Performs research follow-up studies. Assists in data analysis. Participates in quality monitoring through the review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes on a periodic basis to assure quality care.
