A certified nurse midwife (CNM) is a type of advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who treats patients in the areas of reproductive health, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. CNM jobs are projected to grow by 6% over the next decade — an estimated additional 500 nurse midwife jobs — faster than the average for all other occupations.

If you're looking to pursue CNM careers, you’ve come to the right place. Find your next nurse midwife job on IntelyCare today.

Certified Nurse Midwife Education and Skills

In order to become a nurse midwife, you’ll start by earning a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and passing the NCLEX-RN exam. Gain a few years of nursing experience in a related area of nursing, such as labor and delivery or maternal child health.

You will also need to complete either a master of science in nursing (MSN), which is the minimum requirement for certified nurse midwife jobs, or doctor of nursing practice (DNP) nurse midwife program.

Finally, you must pass the exam given by the American Midwifery Certification Board. Then you may apply for a nurse midwifery license through your state’s board of nursing. Learn what else employers may require by reviewing a sample nurse midwife job description.

Nurse Midwife Resume and Cover Letter

As you ready yourself to apply for midwife jobs, take some time to get your application materials in order. Make sure your nurse midwife resume features some key words and phrases mentioned in the job posting. For example, if the facility wants to hire a candidate who has experience treating “both well and ill gynecologic and obstetrical patients,” include that phrase in your resume and then, in your cover letter, elaborate on the care you provided.

Interviewing for Nurse Midwife Jobs

Nervous about a job interview? It happens to everyone. The good news is that you can take some of the stress off your shoulders by reviewing common nurse midwife interview questions and formulating strong answers using examples from your past experience.

Ways of Working

As a nurse midwife, you can choose from full-time, part-time, contract, temporary, or per diem midwife jobs. Additionally, you can pursue work in physicians’ offices, general medical and surgical hospitals, birthing centers, or other settings.

Salary for a Certified Nurse Midwife Job

The average salary for CNM careers is $122,450 per year. Your salary can differ depending on your education level, years of experience, the state in which you practice, and the facility.

Demand can also influence a nurse midwife salary. For example, New York and Minnesota are among the five states that employ the most certified nurse midwives, but the average annual pay in both locations is lower than in West Virginia and Massachusetts, which are among the five states that pay the most to CNMs.
