The Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) will join the longest-standing hospital-based midwifery practice in San Francisco, attending births in a state-of-the art Family Birth Center. This clinical setting offers expanded options to patients, including nitrous oxide, as well as ongoing support of physiologic birth, demonstrated by collaboration with community doula programs and one of the lowest cesarean-section rates in California. ZSFG nurse-midwives are members of a collaborative, interprofessional team with a shared commitment to providing respectful, culturally appropriate care to all patients and families.

The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future and current vacancies in this class at other locations within the DPH for the duration of the eligible list. 

Job Description

Under general nursing direction, the CNM functions within an organized system for the delivery of healthcare as a member of an interprofessional team. The CNM provides nurse-midwifery care in the Obstetrics, Midwifery, & Gynecology Clinic, Family Birth Center, and postpartum unit. In collaboration with the physician, the essential job functions include the following:

  1. Antepartum care (both 1:1 and Centering Pregnancy) in collaboration with Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program team members and social service agencies.
  2. Intrapartum care and Birth Center triage.
  3. Postpartum care (inpatient and outpatient).
  4. Family planning.
  5. Furnishing of medication.
  6. Clinical education of nurse-midwifery students, medical students, and residents.
  7. Documentation of care via electronic medical record.
  8. The 2325 Certified Nurse Midwife may perform other related duties as assigned/required.

Qualifications

License and Certification:

1. Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the California State Board of Registered Nursing.

2. Possession of a valid California Nurse-Midwife license.

3. Possession of certification by the American Midwifery Certification Board.

4. Possession of a valid Nurse-Midwife Furnishing Number issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Training and Evaluation questionnaire to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

Job Details The Certified Nurse-Midwife serves as a member within the General Division in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The CNM is responsible for full-scope midwifery care. The CNM provides independent clinical management of essentially healthy people, including: routine office well gynecologic care, management of minor gynecologic issues, antepartum/intrapartum/postpartum care, and immediate care of the newborn. The CNM will work in the hospital, office-based, and health center care settings as a member of a collaborative care team. The care team consists of OB/GYNs, CNMs, NPs, RNs, social workers, medical assistants, nutritionists. Job Description Provides well person gynecologic care, treatment of minor gynecologic conditions, family planning care, STI diagnosis/treatment, and antepartum/postpartum care in the office-based setting. These offices include: 833 Chestnut Street and Wolf Street Provides antepartum/postpartum care in Philadelphia Department of Public Health Centers.
