Utah Nurse License Renewal: 3 Steps

If you’re an LPN or RN in UT, the steps below will help you renew a Utah nursing license or CNA certification. Keep in mind that there’s a separate process for out-of-state nurses seeking a Utah nursing license by endorsement.

Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline

RN licenses expire on January 31 of odd years, and LPN licenses expire on January 31 of even years. The Division of Professional Licenses will mail notification of your impending renewal at least 60 days prior to the due date — make sure that your mailing address is up to date. If you move, log in to UtahID to update your mailing address.

If your RN license has been expired for fewer than two years, you may still renew it. You must pay a reinstatement fee in addition to the $68 renewal fee. Nurses whose licenses have expired for 30 days or fewer pay $20, and those with licenses expired for between 31 days and two years pay $50.

RN and LPN licenses that have been expired for more than two years cannot be renewed. You must submit a new application, pay the associated fee, and meet the current requirements for your license.

CNAs must renew their certificate every two years. State code requires that CNAs perform nursing or nursing-related services for at least 200 paid hours within the previous two years, in order to be eligible for renewal and to remain on the Utah CNA registry.

Step 2: Complete Continuing Education Requirements

RNs and LPNs must meet one of the following criteria before submitting a renewal application:

At least 400 hours of licensed practice
At least 200 hours of licensed practice along with 15 hours of approved continuing education
30 hours of approved continuing education

Step 3: File Your Utah Nursing License Renewal

RN and LPN: If you’ve met the above requirements and your RN or LPN license is in good standing, you’ll be eligible for license renewal. You can log in to the license renewal system and fill out an online application, or print out a renewal form to be completed as a hard copy.

CNA: You will go through a different renewal process to maintain your place on the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR). Navigate to the homepage and select Renewal Submission on the right side of the window. The state will also mail this form to your home address 45 days before your expiration date. You’ll need an RN, human resources representative, or administrator to verify your work requirement.

CNA certification renewals are free in Utah, but if your form is up to six months late, you’ll need to pay a fee of $40. If your form is between six and 24 months late, you’ll need to take the CNA exam again.
