Doula Cover Letter Sample and Writing Tips

If you’re drafting your doula cover letter for a birthing care job, what should you include and leave out? Cover letters can be a difficult application element, but they’re essential if you really want the role. Think of it as a chance to show some personality and add depth to your application.

Your cover letter is separate from your doula CV. Cover letter formatting is typically in paragraph form, and it’s a chance to go deeper into why you do what you do and why you’re good at it. If you also need help with your resume, see our doula resume guide. And follow these tips for a great cover letter:

  • Speak to the needs of the job description. Are you applying to a private practice that specializes in home births, or a hospital-based doula program? If you’re looking for a role in a mother-baby unit, you’ll want to highlight the skills of a postpartum doula. Cover letter personalization doesn’t have to be in-depth, but it should show that you understand the organization’s mission and needs.
  • Show personality. While your resume lists your experience and certifications, a cover letter is a chance to show the hiring manager more of who you are as a person and a provider. This doesn’t have to be lengthy — a sentence or two about why you chose this path or a powerful experience you’ve had could be enough.
  • Include nonclinical accomplishments. If you’re writing a doula cover letter with no experience, highlight roles where you’ve used essential skills like empathy, judgment, documentation, and collaboration. You might include volunteer work, experience through a training program, or working with family members.
  • Keep it concise and readable. Depending on the role, a single hiring manager might be reading dozens of applications. Break up your text into paragraphs, try to avoid run-on sentences, and use sections so that it’s skimmable.

Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

I’m writing to express my interest in joining your interdisciplinary community birthing team. As a certified birth doula and lactation counselor with over 12 years of experience across hospital and home birth settings, I’m drawn to your model of collaborative, community-rooted care. I believe that every birthing person deserves both informed support and genuine connection, and I see those values reflected in your approach.

In my early years at St. Mary’s Hospital Birthing Center, I worked alongside nurses, midwives, and OBs in a high-volume unit, supporting families through everything from first births to VBACs and medically complex deliveries. Later, I transitioned into home birth work, partnering with local midwifery practices to provide continuous care through labor, birth, and early postpartum. In both settings, I’ve prioritized flexibility, teamwork, and clear communication, with the goal of helping clients feel safe, seen, and empowered.

I’m especially interested in joining a team that integrates clinical and emotional support in a way that reflects the full experience of birth. My background in developmental psychology, along with training in trauma-informed perinatal care and Spinning Babies, helps me meet clients where they are — whether they’re navigating a birth plan, coping with labor, adjusting to life with a newborn, or navigating loss.

I’d love the opportunity to contribute to a team that values inclusive, whole-person care and centers the needs of families throughout the birth journey. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the chance to learn more about your work and how I might fit in to help you serve patients.

Warmly,

Cordelia Clamp
