Assists with the coordination of nursing care of the patient in the operating room and functions as a team member of the surgical team. What you will do Collaborates with physicians to provide for the specialized needs of the surgical patient. Builds trusting collaborative relationship with surgeons to ensure optimal outcomes. Anticipates supply equipment needs in advance so that arrangements can be made in a timely and cost effective manner. Monitor and support personal and departmental needs to include flexing and shift changes to meet the needs of the department. Uses time in a productive manner. Demonstrates a surgical conscience by maintaining an aseptic environment during the surgical procedure and by recording breaks in technique per AORN Standards. Demonstrates consistent proficient knowledge of procedure specific utilization of instruments, equipment, and supplies. Responsible for assuring safe practices as referenced in the National Patient Safety Goals and by following RHS policies and procedures, as well as guidelines outlined in AORN, CMS, and DNV. Identifies and reports noncompliance or violations appropriately. Ensures preference cards are maintained and updated by consistently communicating changes to appropriate team members. Demonstrates the ability to build collaborative professional relationships with a multi-disciplinary team to support patient care needs. Participates and provides feedback in supply utilization, new equipment/product evaluations; identifying and recommending solutions for cost containment and waste reduction. Participates positively in training and support of all team members, volunteers and students. Actively supports and assists the perioperative registered nurse and team in the care of the patients. Demonstrates responsibility for accurate handling/management of specimens and surgical count. Demonstrates a sense of urgency to facilitate positive customer throughout the department/facility. Addresses customers' needs regardless of assignment. Summary GENERAL SUMMARY The Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting the RN and surgeon during operative procedures. The Surgical Technician assists with cases of various degrees of complexity. This role may require the ability to work flexible shifts and be on call to help fulfill 24/7 operations. Reports to the Operating Room Manager. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Arranges and inventories sterile set up utilizing knowledge of asepsis and sterilization techniques. Provides a safe and efficient environment for the surgical patient under the direction of the registered nurse within a defined scope of practice. Performs other duties as assigned. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Certification in operating room technology or surgical technology through the National Association of Operating Room Technicians required. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology, operating room technology or a school of practical nursing or equivalent program required. Basic knowledge to perform arithmetic calculations when maintaining record of charges normally acquired through completion of high school. Approximately three to six months of related experience, preferred, in order to learn sterile techniques, become familiar with anesthesia equipment and cleaning procedures, and learn inventory techniques. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with the surgical team and maintain effective contacts with physicians and hospital employees. Familiarity and manual dexterity required with all basic surgical instruments, supplies, equipment and procedures. Basic analytical skills necessary to develop solutions to problems concerning technical needs of surgery. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when conducting procedures and operating special computer software. BLS-HCP Certification required and/or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. WORKING CONDITIONS Surgical areas work environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals. Possible exposure to infectious agents when handling instruments or hazardous materials. Potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.
