Summary GENERAL SUMMARY The Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting the RN and surgeon during operative procedures. The Surgical Technician assists with cases of various degrees of complexity. This role may require the ability to work flexible shifts and be on call to help fulfill 24/7 operations. Reports to the Operating Room Manager. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Arranges and inventories sterile set up utilizing knowledge of asepsis and sterilization techniques. Assists in preparing and moving of patients, cleaning and room set up. Provides a safe and efficient environment for the surgical patient under the direction of the registered nurse within a defined scope of practice. Performs other duties as assigned. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Certification in operating room technology or surgical technology through the National Association of Operating Room Technicians required. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology, operating room technology or a school of practical nursing or equivalent program required. Basic knowledge to perform arithmetic calculations when maintaining record of charges normally acquired through completion of high school. Approximately three to six months of related experience, preferred, in order to learn sterile techniques, become familiar with anesthesia equipment and cleaning procedures, and learn inventory techniques. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with the surgical team and maintain effective contacts with physicians and hospital employees. Familiarity and manual dexterity required with all basic surgical instruments, supplies, equipment and procedures. Basic analytical skills necessary to develop solutions to problems concerning technical needs of surgery. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when conducting procedures and operating special computer software. BLS-HCP Certification required and/or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. WORKING CONDITIONS Surgical areas work environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals. Possible exposure to infectious agents when handling instruments or hazardous materials. Potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed. As a clinical associate, you will provide basic clinical services to patients and clerical support to the unit health-care team. This position is full time, working day/evening/night shift with every other weekend and rotating holidays 8 Crystal Spring Tower Intensive Care Unit (8 CST ICU) is a 12-bed specialized surgical intensive care unit that serves several primary patient populations. Our critical care nurses’ practice in a setting where patients require complex ongoing assessment, multiple therapies, and interventions. This unit has a reputation for excellence and currently the only ICU within the Carilion Clinic system to be recognized with a Gold Level Beacon Award by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. Our nurses rely upon a specialized body of knowledge, skills, and experience to provide care to patients after vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, interventional radiology, or an acute stroke. Welcomes and assists patients and visitors with registration. May assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges. Coordinates patient flow into/out of area using department/unit specific software and Intranet. Schedules patient therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. May review medical records for outstanding orders and notifies nurse of stat orders and medication changes. Cleans unit-based equipment and gathers supplies needed to operate equipment between patients as needed. Transports patients, supplies specimens and equipment within the facility. May assist with chart audits. May perform unit-based patient care tasks for patients. May participate in the sitter process Interacts with patients, visitors, physicians, and other health professionals. Answers incoming calls via telephone and patient call system. Routes calls as needed and takes messages. Provides scheduling coverage support for department/unit staff scheduling, including back up coverage. Operates and maintains general office equipment. Orders department/unit supplies and equipment and stocks/organizes supplies. Serves as a resource for department/unit software system. Monitors cleanliness of waiting and break rooms and performs safety/environmental rounds. Assists with maintaining regulatory compliance in unit. Please note - employee must attend mandatory orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for the first 2 weeks of employment. All classes require to be in person except for 2 online classes. What We Require: Education: High school graduate or GED.
