Department Overview The Division of Gastrointestinal and General Surgery is a comprehensive team of surgeons focused on the areas of colorectal surgery, esophageal surgery, hernia surgery, treatment of pancreatic cancer and surgical nutrition. Our general surgeons support numerous clinical research trials and actively partner with scientists in the community to develop innovative surgical devices. The general surgery division also encompasses one of the largest residency programs in the country, as well as fellowships in minimally invasive surgery and colorectal surgery. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is an Instructor credentialed and privileged as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) (in a respective Specialty area; i.e., Nurse Practitioner (NP), Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)). The APP is a member of the OHSU Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws. The APP shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The APP is expected to comply with scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice. The Advanced Practice Provider (APN or NP) will work in collaboration with the colorectal surgeons to staff the outpatient colorectal surgery practice. The Instructor is supported by the colorectal surgeons and the Chief of GI and General Surgery. Function/Duties of Position The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a key member of a multi-disciplinary patient care team, which includes physicians who represent both medical and surgical disciplines, residents, nurses, dieticians, and other clinical and business support staff. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct advanced practice nursing care for patients. S/he assesses patient and family needs both pre- operatively as well as post- operatively, develops a plan of care, implements and evaluates the care delivered. The Nurse Practitioner serves as key communication link between the referring providers, patient, his/her family, and the care team. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a continuous advocate for patients and their families.
