Job Summary and Qualifications Position Summary : The Surgical Technician II I (STII I ) demonstrate s the knowledge and skills necessary to provide assistance during surgical procedures performed in the department. The ST III assist s in the cleaning and preparation of the operating room suite according to Ho spital standards and policies, p articipates in the care and cleaning of OR equipment , and is experienced in a ll aspects of aseptic technique. A ssists in setting up the re quired equipment and sterile supplies , supports t he surgeon by providing instrumentation appropriate for t he task as needed for their assigned cases, pulli ng cases as needed, and breaks down cases at the end of the procedure. He/she is knowledgeable regarding instrumentation, equipment and supply needs for all types of surgical procedures. The ST II performs delegated duties consistent w ith his/her scope of practice, functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery , is required to take call as needed by the department and completes other duties as assigned . Essential Job Responsibilities: Complies with hospital/departmental policies and procedures, i.e., attendance, mandatory education, safety, infection control, etc. Performs patient care within the scope of training of the OR technician and under the direction of the RN. Respects patient’s rights by maintaining patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality. Demonstrates ICARE standards at all times . Can recognize and respond appropriately in an emergency situation. Attends unit specific education sessions. Attends 80% of all mandatory meetings and in-services. Reading and reviewing emails and other department communication . Prepares for each procedure and/or surgery. Can organize work and utilize time efficiently. Has knowledge of a safe transfer of the surgical patient. Demonstrates knowledge of the step-by-step positioning of the patient on the OR table. Maintains a clean OR suite for the surgical patients. Maintains a safe environment for the surgical patients by checking the conditions and cleanliness of equipment before procedure. Demonstrates working knowledge of the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for all cases. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating manuals, and maintenance manuals . Performs intra-operative management of assigned procedures. Initiates and maintains a sterile field throughout surgical procedures by adhering to the principles of asepsis. Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately at all times and monitors other staff for compliance. Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative site. Anticipates needs of surgeon. Assists the circulating nurse in maintaining correct needle, sponge, and instrument counts. Appropriately handles all specimens. Demonstrates knowledge of and correct procedure in managing patient with system specific procedures. Assumes responsibility for supply and equipment management appropriate to position and in compliance with department standard. Determines priority in supply and instrument needs and ensures availability. Assists in maintenance of instruments and equipment by proper utilization , cleaning, care , and sterilization. Removes and reports all damaged or unsafe equipment. Assists with post procedure workload including: cleaning room between procedures, putting away all unused supplies & setting up for the next procedure. Actively participates in OR turnover . Position Requirements Licensure/Certification/Registration: State of Colorado Surgical Registry required . Current BLS Certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross . Current CST Certification from NBSTSA preferred. Education: Graduation from an accredited program for Operating Room Technicians. Experience: One year of experience as a Surg ical Technician. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities : Basic to advanced knowledge in the scrub role and multiple surgical specialties. Demonstrates good organizational skills. Communicates positively and professionally with all internal and external customers. I s authorized to ha ndle medications on the sterile field including syringes, needles, etc. and is accountable to the registered nurse for oversight of this practice. Perform various duties including but not limited to: provide assistance to surgical team during the intra-operative phase, provide aseptic, safe, appropriately equipped and functional surgical environment. Responsible for OR preparation, instrument supply and assembly, maintenance of sterile fields, hands off instruments and initiation of counts throughout procedures. Perform Surgical Technologist duties including on-call duties as need or required. Qualifications Equal to completion of 4 years of high school plus additional specialized courses or training is required. Graduation from an approved Surgical Technology Program is required. Certified Surgical Technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized surgical technologist certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologist within 12 months of graduation from program or within 6 months of hire if greater than 12 months from graduation. Certification in Basic Life Support is required. One (1) year of related work experience is preferred. Must be fully vaccinated against seasonal Influenza and the COVID 19 virus or to be exempt from the requirement for medical or personal reasons by signing a statement certifying you are choosing to be exempt from vaccination once hired Compensation: Pay rate will be determined based on level of experience.
