Substitute Regional School Nurse

General Responsibilities Reporting directly to the Health Services Manager, the Regional School Nurse implements, manages and delivers school health services to school districts and /or agencies. The school nurse scope of practice is defined by law and regulation and professional school nursing standards. Assignment: We are building a School Nurse Substitute Pool in the Columbia River Gorge. These positions are on-call/as needed. Essential Functions/Other Functions Essential Functions:Assess the critical health needs of students in schools, i.e., review Emergency Care Plans (ECP) for students with life threatening medical conditions, medically fragile students, students with health concerns and/or requiring nursing treatments. Collaborate and consult with administrators and other staff to identify school safety and environmental health needs. Assess the physical and emotional health of students within the scope of the Regional School Nurse practice; initiate referrals for diagnosis and treatment of identified health needs; and communicate health concerns that impact learning to staff. Coordinate and implement mandated health screenings, including referral and follow-up. Supervise, train and delegate medication administration and nursing treatments as allowed by law. Provide health counseling and crisis intervention to students; serve as an advocate for the health rights of students and as a professional liaison between the school, family, and health community. Perform professional nursing tasks including emergency services. Serve as a resource for health education to the classroom teacher. Consult and collaborate with staff, parents and other professionals to assess student health status and make recommendations that are consistent with the individualized education plan. Collect health care services data. May assist school districts with policies and procedures for school health services based on current laws and accepted practices. Other Functions: Other duties as assigned. Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & Skills Minimum Qualifications: Valid Washington State registered nurse (RN) license. Experience in pediatrics and willingness to delegate care in a school setting. Current CPR/1st aid certification. Experience in the health care of school age children. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Nursing; valid Washington ESA certificate as a school nurse; school nurse experience in public or private schools. Experience working with community service agencies, i.e. health professionals, department of health, social services. Experience providing health education training to individuals or in a classroom setting. Experience in pediatrics and the health care of school age children. Working Conditions/Employment Requirements Working Conditions: Exposed to diseases carried by students, exposed to student noise levels. Travel to school buildings and districts to provide services. Ability to physically move and/or lift equipment varying in weight up to 35 lb. Regular attendance during assigned work schedule. To provide quality school nurse services to meet specific requirements in state statutes, state rules and regulations and District policy related to the overall health care of students in the school system. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Assess health status and needs of students and facilitate the educational process by modifying or removing health related barriers to learning. Assist in health budget planning and maintain necessary first aid supplies and health related materials and equipment in assigned school(s). Render emergency first aid and/or emergency care as necessary to students and staff members in compliance with established standards and complete accident and service reports and logs. Provide information to staff members and students who have special health needs. Serve as a resource person in the education planning for students with specific health deficits in the District. When assigned by a Special Education Case Manager, design appropriate goals, objectives and timelines for appropriate school related special education health services for eligible students. Provide quality educational based special education health service based on goals related to deficit areas. Monitor and document student progress and communicate progress with appropriate students, staff, parents and other members of the school-based team(s). Develop care plans for and serve as a resource person in the educational planning for medically fragile students, as requested. Act as a liaison between home, school and community resources and makes referrals to appropriate community agencies. Provide health counseling to students/staff regarding chronic illness, nutrition programs and positive lifestyles as appropriate. Perform various types of health screening assessment activities and cooperates with other district screenings, make recommendations, and do follow-up based on the results of these screenings. Follow time schedules, attends and participates in all assigned meetings, and maintains a positive professional manner with students, parents and staff.
