Nurse Practitioner II

Overview General Obstetrics & Gynecology nurse practitioners’ function in an expanded nursing role and perform selected tasks and services previously within the province of medicine as well as tasks that fall within the province of nursing. Nursing and medicine must maintain ongoing collaboration in education and practice so that the nurse practitioner is maximally effective in meeting the primary health-care needs of women. When performing nursing aspects of this role, the practitioner must have the opportunity to engage in independent as well as co-operative decision making. When performing expanded aspects of the role that overlap with medicine, the practitioner must function in collaboration with qualified physicians within the framework of jointly approved guidelines. Nurse practitioners not only must be prepared and competent to apply additional knowledge and skills, but also must be ready and willing to accept responsibility and accountability for their practice. Primary care is provided at all levels of the health-care system, but predominately in an ambulatory setting. The obstetric-gynecologic/women’s health nurse practitioner provides such care in collaboration with physicians, as well as with other members of the health-care team. Position supports all office locations. Practitioner will be required to travel between all office locations. Position will work directly with the Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery division within the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Responsibilities Provide diagnostic and therapeutic healthcare for complex gynecological conditions, such as endometriosis and abnormal uterine bleeding. Perform history and physical examinations, initial medical decision making and perform minor office procedures. Educate patients as to the nature of disease and provide instruction on proper treatment and care. Provide general OBGYN principles and practices to patient care. Obtain a complete health, psychosocial, obstetric, and gynecologic history and record findings in a systematic, accurate, and succinct form. Perform a complete physical examination, with specific emphasis on the reproductive system. Manage post-operative care, performing clinical follow-ups and collaborating with surgeons and healthcare team. Order, perform, and interpret routine laboratory tests. Provide clinical and medication management of women having gynecologic problems. Co-manage care for patients with selected health complications in collaboration with the physician. Arrange referrals to other members of the health-care team as needed and to community resources as appropriate. Monitor and make recommendations to nursing policy and procedure manual to include development of nursing protocols and procedures for same. Partner with the Division Director, Department Administrator and Practice Manager on quality standards, meaningful use, clinical workflows, nursing education and the delivery of exceptional patient care. Perform inpatient post-operative rounds, consultations and emergency department consultations as necessary. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications MSN with a nurse practitioner focus is required. Must be a licensed RN by the Virginia Board of Nursing and a certified nurse practitioner.
