Overview The Medical ICU (MICU) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a 42-bed intensive care unit that specializes in the care of patients experiencing a full range of clinical issues, including abnormal blood disorders, diabetic ketoacidosis, heart, renal and liver failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma and a multitude of other conditions and diseases. We provide advanced training in critical care lines and interventions such as Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, central lines, ventilators, dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy and targeted temperature management. Our extensive orientation and Nurse Residency Program are designed to ensure new nurses are equipped with the critical thinking and advanced skills needed to be successful in our high acuity unit. The unit is led by a Patient Care Manager, Assistant Nurse Managers, Team Lead Charge Nurses, an Advanced Practice Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Clinical Education Specialists. Additionally, the unit is assigned a case manager, social worker, physical and occupational therapists, dietitian, and a pharmacist. This multidisciplinary team works in conjunction with the Medical and Pulmonary Attendings, Fellows, Residents, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians and Unit Secretaries.
