A Brief Overview Coordinates professional nursing and individualized, family centered care to neonatal patients under 4 months of age or any NICU transfer in the critical care transport environment. Care and transport of the critically ill patient is supported using the nursing process and clinical skills in accordance with Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) standards and hospital policies and procedures. Varied schedules to include weekend and holiday patterns. Essential Functions Conducts individualized age-specific patient/family assessments according to defined unit scope and nursing practice standards. (Individualized refers to the patient’s developmental, cognitive, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational/family influences and physical/medical care needs.) Initial Assessment: ▪ Collects and documents data related to patient’s individualized care. ▪ Demonstrates age-specific competency in assessment of patients by the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient needs, knowledge of growth and development, and understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients. ▪ Assesses patient/family need for education and uses an individualized approach in delivery style. ▪ Assess and interprets patient data upon arrival at the referring hospital. Reassessment: ▪ Performs reassessment based on unit standards, and changes in patient condition. Communicates changes to appropriate persons (MCP, transport partner, family) as indicated. ▪ Performs reassessments on transports after interventions and as needed. Communicates changes to medical control physician. Develops individualized patient/family plan of care using clinical practice guidelines to meet identified needs. (Plan of Care includes current and anticipated actions focused on stabilization, care, and transport needs.) Utilizes assessment data from the referral hospital or team as well as transport assessment data to individualize patient care and transport needs. Utilizes individualized assessment data to develop the patient/family’s plan of care. Revises plan of care based on patient’s condition and transport conditions (weather, distance, mode.) Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient care or interventions based on assessments/reassessments. While on transport, develops and initiates a plan of care incorporating current and potential problems requiring intervention, expected response and the medical plan of care in collaboration with the medical control physician. Communicates the plan to the receiving nurse prior to arrival at Children’s Hospital or receiving facility. Implements and evaluates nursing actions in accordance with the individualized patient/family plan of care and patient condition/needs. Incorporates critical thinking into the delivery of clinical skills and in analyzing patient response to orders, tests, labs, medications, and treatments. Demonstrates clinical competence in administering interventions according to identified standards and age specific needs. During the transport process, prioritizes and organizes care based on patient acuity, time limitations and consultation with medical control physician. Initiates action to prevent current or potential risk to a patient in an emergent situation. Documentation reflects accurate assessment/evaluation, modification, and patients’ response to therapy, changes in condition, and therapeutic interventions/procedures. Entries into the electronic medical record follow transport documentation policy. Documentation is completed within established timeframes. Demonstrates responsiveness to the organizational functions of the transport process. Response times are within targeted benchmarks set by the program. Complies with ambulance, helicopter, and fixed wing operational safety in accordance with current guidelines. Checks, cleans, and stocks transport bags and equipment. Ensures equipment is in good working order. Maintains all transport equipment in a state of mission readiness by checking all equipment at the beginning of each shift, noting any discrepancies, and ensuring steps toward resolution. Cleans equipment and restocks bags after a transport. Demonstrates knowledge of transport equipment location, function, and restocking procedures. Demonstrates the ability to troubleshoot all equipment and ensures that all malfunctions are promptly reported. Completes daily, weekly, monthly, and ongoing equipment checklists. Completes quarterly competencies, monthly education, aircrew training, and other educational and professional development requirements when assigned. Recruiter Contact Allie Bruss | allang@nebraskamed.com Job Duties: APP Specialty Care - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Provide comprehensive health care to individuals and families in the neonatal intensive care unit. Practice across the continuum, providing primary, acute, chronic, and critical care to neonates, infants, and toddlers through two years of age. Attend high risk deliveries and resuscitations, execute clinically indicated advanced diagnostic and therapeutic invasive procedures, and perform daily patient management in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Diagnose medical conditions, plan and implement interventions, and evaluate patient responses in collaboration with a designated supervising physician. Perform and assist with diagnostic and therapeutic medical and/or surgical procedures. Required Qualifications: Nurse Practitioner - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) • Master's degree in nursing from an accredited school/college of nursing required. • Minimum of two years RN experience or equivalent combination of RN and nurse practitioner experience combined (two years of RN experience equals one year of APRN experience) required. • Ability to function with autonomy and able to make independent decisions while functioning as part of a comprehensive team required. • Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written forms required. • Ability to provide critical thinking and analytical skills required. • Efficient use of information systems, data processing systems, telecommunication devices, office equipment, and audiovisual teaching/education resources required. • Ability to comprehend and follow policy, procedure, guidelines and protocols required. • Flexibility and dedication to team involvement and supporting organizational goals required. • Knowledge of health care policy and societal factors affecting the delivery of care required. • Familiar with patient care equipment as appropriate to specialty area required. • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska or current compact state required. • Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner (APRN) required. • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required, must be from an American Heart Association endorsed program upon first renewal. • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) certification required. • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required. The staff cares for a variety of medical and telemetry patients with acute and/or chronic illness, such as sepsis, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine, cardiac disease, and COVID-19. Staff members will manage titratable drips, chest tubes, tracheostomies, complex wound care, post-bariatric procedures, high oxygen delivery systems and end-of-life care. 5 West is known as the “5 West Wolfpack” because of its outstanding teamwork. Its centralized nursing station allows staff to build camaraderie, learn and grow together. The culture and close-knit environment on 5 West make this unit ideal for new and experienced nurses. It is the only unit in the hospital to have a Zen room, which features a massage chair, adult coloring books and other materials to support staff who need to reset their mindset. The staff and leaders on our team are passionate about mentoring, professional development, and finding new and innovative ways to care for patients! 5 West leaders support their new staff by providing in depth orientation, goal planning, progress meetings and check-ins 30/60/90 days post-orientation completion. 5 West will transition to a team-based care delivery model in January 2025.
