What's our Operating Room like? State-of-the-art equipment including two Da Vinci XI robots, CT, and Image Navigated Surgery! Surgeries include cardiac, open heart, endovascular surgery, urologic and general surgeries including bariatric (Center of Excellence) services, orthopedic, neuro spine and brain, and trauma surgery. All surgical specialty services and trauma are provided except burns and organ transplant procedures. Population includes pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Number of beds and number of patient treatment areas: 18 beds. Average about 250 cases Monday - Friday. Level II trauma center. One of the busiest ERs on the West Coast! What you'll do Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field by organizing instruments, equipment, and supplies in accordance with aseptic technique and hospital protocols. Conduct safety checks and ensure that surgical instruments and equipment are functioning properly before procedures begin. Actively support the surgical team by anticipating the needs of the surgeon and providing the correct instruments and supplies throughout the procedure. Participate in key patient safety protocols, including time-outs, medication labeling, hand hygiene, and post-procedure debriefs. Assist in patient positioning using safe body mechanics, and support dressing application, medication preparation on the sterile field, and proper specimen management. Take initiative during unassigned time to support unit needs such as stocking supplies, updating preference cards, and preparing rooms for upcoming cases. Foster a collaborative team environment by mentoring new staff, communicating clearly with team members and patients, and participating in process improvement efforts using Lean methodologies. Manage the storage and transport of surgical specimens and assist in ordering and stocking non-controlled medications and supplies for the unit. Required qualifications Basic Life Support (BLS). And will follow any one of three paths: Path I: Completion of an Accredited Educational Program Completion of a surgical technology educational program accredited by a national accreditation organization that is approved by the Oregon Health Authority; and Holds a current surgical technologist certification issued through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or obtains surgical technologist certification through the NBSTSA within twelve months of program completion. Path II: Completion of a US Military Surgical Technologist Training Program Provides documentation showing completion of a training program for surgical technologists in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; and Demonstrates that sixteen hours of approved continuing education was completed every two years. Path III: Experience Provides documentation demonstrating practice of surgical technology during at least two of the years between January 1, 2014, and January 1, 2017; and If experienced in the state of Oregon, must also demonstrate that sixteen hours of continuing education was completed every two years since 1/1/2017. Job Description Summary: The Surgical Technologist and/or the Certified Surgical Technologist prepares the room and gathers supplies needed for surgical procedures; delivers instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other members of the surgical team intra operatively; may function as second assistant to the surgeon; assists in the proper decontamination of the room, supplies and instruments post operatively. Responsibilities And Duties: 40% Prepares for surgical cases by obtaining and preparing appropriate supplies, equipment and instruments, reviews surgeon's preferences to determine required items. Establishes and maintains a sterile field and presents instruments to the operating team. Delivers appropriate instruments/supplies utilizing proper principles of sterile technique. Acts as 2nd assistant to surgeon, performing duties related to draping and operative site exposure. Responsible for removal of all sharps and initials return card for verification. Can hold extremities. Assist with casting and splinting. Mixes medications on the sterile field once verification by a registered nurse has occurred. Assist with positioning, can fix specimens in formalin (annual competency required), assists circulator in proper care and handling of surgical specimens. Can wash and thaw grafts, can hold a stapler while surgeon fires it, can operate skin stapler for the purpose of wound approximation and can assist with the dislocation of joints if yearly competency is accomplished. Can cut suture material as directed by and under the supervision of a surgeon, Can apply ESU to clamps or forceps for hemostasis under the direct supervision of the surgeon, can assist anesthesia if yearly competency is accomplished, Can assist with patient skin prep if yearly competency is accomplished, Can change out camera and robotic instruments during endoscopic procedures under the direct supervision of the surgeon, Can manipulate the uterus during robotic cases under the direct supervision of the surgeon. 40% Equipment and Supply Maintenance: Assists in post-procedure cleaning of the OR/equipment, returns equipment/supplies to proper areas; assists in room re-stocking. May run dart/biologics for sterilizers (annual competency required), reports any damaged equipment appropriately, mops floor between cases, and ensures that all equipment cords are not frayed and free from cuts as well as other duties as assigned. 20% Unit Operations: Participates in unit operations to contribute to efficiency of department, effective communication, quality care, personal growth as well as development, training, and orientation of new personnel. Maintains all annual unit specific competencies, ACE and PAR requirements. Will mentor new associates. CAN DO: Can mix medications on the sterile field, following verification with an RN. Can deliver medications to the sterile field if an RN is in scrub role. Can run dart / biologics for sterilizers if annual competency has been met. Can sterilize instrumentation if annual competency has been met Can assist with positioning. Can hold extremities. Can check next case cart. Can perform room turnover and set-up for subsequent cases. Can assist with casting and splint application/removal. Can participate in verification of specimen and specimen labeling with Surgery team. Anticipates the needs in the surgical field when passing instruments, and assist the surgical team in all procedures. The surgical technician is responsible for his/her case clean up, for positioning patients, moving patients and room turnovers. Under the general supervision of the Manager of Perioperative Services, and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for filling the surgical scrub role on all types of minor and major surgical procedures dependent on individual competencies in each surgical specialty. Assists physicians and nurses in various medical and technical procedures. These functions must be in compliance with the philosophy of the hospital, standards of practice and regulations of governing agencies. Minimum Qualifications • High School graduate or equivalent required • Certification as a Surgical Technologist required • Two years previous experience as an operating room technician desired • Current BCLS Essential Functions Decision making concerning equipment and/or instrumentation sterilization Bio hazardous waste disposal Housekeeping duties Patient care and patient flow Complies with hospital practice standards regarding competent performance duties Maintains patient confidentiality Creates a safe environment in which surgery may take place Uses medical equipment in a safe manner Helps provide cost effective patient care Implements principles of medical and surgical asepsis in accordance with recognized national standards and hospital specific policies and procedures Provides physical safety for the patient Accounts for sponges, needles, instruments, and other potential foreign bodies Supports other hospital personnel in the performance of their duties Assists surgeon in scrubbed cases Pulls supplies for upcoming cases Demonstrates cooperative work attitude towards and with coworkers, employees, management, patients, visitors and physicians Maintains a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA guidelines and infection control standards Demonstrates knowledge of Instrument Processing from decontamination to storage of sterile packages Checks room for cleanliness, availability of supplies and equipment for all assigned cases at the beginning of each day Utilizes surgeon preference card to select packs, supplies and instruments Performs surgical hand scrub and dons sterile gown and gloves according to gowning and gloving policy Maintains proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving surgeon and draping patient Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts according to count policy Handles specimen per established policy Transports instruments to decontamination area utilizing appropriate technique and in compliance with established policies and procedures Puts unused sterile supplies and instruments away at the end of the day Restocks operating rooms to established PAR levels Adheres to attendance, punctuality, meal and break time period policies Completes work in an acceptable time frame and in an independent manner Carries out assigned duties in an effective, productive, and efficient manner Demonstrates a positive “can do” attitude Willingness to adjust personal schedule periodically as workload fluctuates and as department needs require Attends 100% of department meetings or documents review of materials presented Functions as a team member following the rules of engagement of the department and hospital Communicates information about customers or other employees only as necessary to conduct hospital related business Adheres to strictest confidentiality in dealing with patients, families, hospital personnel, and the public Keeps supervisor apprised of work progress Has a proactive attitude about problem resolution Anticipates customers’ needs and provides for them as quickly as possible Models core values to co-workers continuously Follows hospital and departmental safety policies and procedures Reports unsafe situations to supervisor Adheres to hospital and departmental dress code Wears name badge at all times Demonstrates knowledge of hospital wide emergency management codes and plans Demonstrates knowledge of and participation in hospital performance improvement program, infection control program and risk management program Demonstrates knowledge of cultural, spiritual, and aged related consideration when interacting/caring for patients Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
