Ensures the presence and proper arrangement of surgical equipment and supplies in the operating room to each operation; assists the surgeon during the operation as allowed by professional and legal standards; and assists with cleaning operating room after the operation ensuring proper routing of equipment, and used material. Reports to Manager. Qualifications Completion of a surgical technologist program. Must be certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or be able to obtain certification within one year of employment. Maintenance of CPR, BLS validation and attendance of annual Validation Day required. Knowledge of various surgical procedures with the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and to recognize the problems encountered by the surgeon. Knowledge of name and function of surgical equipment and instrumentation required. Excellent interpersonal/communication skills. Strict adherence to policies and regulations regarding maintenance of sterile field required. Knowledge and practice of basic care and patient safety concepts. Application of the principles of asepsis in a manner that provides optimal patient care. Knowledge of OR emergency situations. Primary role will be as a CST in one of our seven cardiac or vascular operating rooms. High volume OR, averaging 30 open heart cases per week. This talented OR team covers the specialty areas of Cardiac and Vascular. Hybrid endovascular procedures, open vascular cases, and busy Open Heart program, including transplant and Heart failure surgeries. Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed. Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants. Helps in draping sterile field. Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure. Prepares sterile dressings. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room. Assists in prepping room for the next patient. Obtains appropriate sterile and unsterile items needed for procedure. Opens sterile supplies. Properly cares for specimens. Secures dressings after incision closure. Maintains compliance in RQI. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary. Qualifications Minimum Education/Experience Required: Completion of Surgical Technology program and certified as a Surgical Technologist or 3 years’ experience as a Surgical Technologist and willing to obtain certification within one year of employment. The Surgical Technologist certification for current employees in a Surgical Technologist position prior to 3/28/18 will be grandfathered in and will not be required. BLS certification required. Special Knowledge, Skills, Training: The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit.
