Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and Registered Nurses. They help to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintain a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, preparing sterile dressing and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization. This is a great hands-on learning opportunity that will allow you to enhance your skills each and every day. A caregiver in this role will work days and on-call. Orientation is 6 months long, Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available. Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery. Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients. Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure. Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.” Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) OR Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program Certification of either CST or TS-C required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Certified Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT) Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Summary Plans for, delivers, documents and evaluates nursing care of patients in an assigned area in terms of their individuals needs, according to provider’s orders and in conformance with approved and recognized nursing standards of care, recognized nursing techniques, procedures and administrative policy. Directs activities of assigned nursing personnel in such care. Observes, assesses and reports on the condition of patients. Maintains accurate and timely documentation of care reflecting patient’s condition, treatment, and response to care. Qualifications Required: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing (or a program seeking accreditation). Current registered nurse licensure in the State of Ohio. Current AHA Basic Life Support for the healthcare provider certification or obtains within 90 days of hire.Must have: - A thorough knowledge of nursing theory and practice, including basic knowledge relating to nursing such as biological, physical, psychosocial, and medical sciences and their applications. - A thorough knowledge of the use and care of instruments, equipment and supplies related to nursing service or ambulatory medical practice. - A thorough knowledge of the theory and principles of medical asepsis. - The ability to maintain positive working relations with other employees and medical staff. - A high degree of physical coordination and finger-hand dexterity.PRN and Float Staff must have a minimum of one year or number of years as determined by specific clinical unit, recent experience in area of clinical interest. All clinical nurses must possess or acquire within the defined period of time following placement into position, all unit-specific competencies as defined below:The American Heart Association (AHA) courses are the required certifications for (unit specific): - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), - Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), - Pediatric Advanced Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) course is the required certification for Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Preferred: BSN and certification:Operating Room: One year of OR experience; Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certificationPost Procedure Care Unit:One year PACU or critical care experience.Pediatric Clinic: Two years of pediatric experiencePsychiatry: One year of prior psychiatric experienceRadiology: Five years of critical care experience. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.Cardio-Pulm Rehab: Two years prior experience in Cardiac-Pulmonary Nursing (outpatient or inpatient). Previous experience with the following: smoking cessation, wellness, exercise in special populations (i.e., diabetes, obesity, arthritis)TB Clinic: Public Health or TB Experience, excellent organizational and communication skills, prior supervisory or project management experience. Physical Requirements: May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day. May need to sit or stand for extended periods. See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. Ability to lift 250-300 pounds with assistance. Ability to push/pull up to 500 pounds with assistance. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids. Requires some exposure to chemicals and cleaning products. Physical Demands:
