Assists with processing prescription refill requests for approval and forwarding to pharmacies. Maintains medical inventory of supplies and keeps exam rooms stocked appropriately. Keeps any necessary equipment in operating order and facilitating preventive maintenance when needed. Ensures compliance with healthcare regulations with scope of practice, HIPAA, and OSHA standards. Completes all required competencies and education to maintain skill level to provide safe patient care. Acts as a liaison between physician and patient, by providing support and comfort to patients and families during clinic visits and procedures as needed, including chaperoning during sensitive examinations. Demonstrates excellent customer service to include providing timely patient response and follow up by phone and electronic means. Manages patient expectations with clear explanations (i.e., informing patients about delays as appropriate) and effectively manages the providers' patient schedules. Assists patients with providing access to care with appointments, referrals, and providing necessary information. Assists with patient education per protocol and direct provider instruction to include directions in the after-visit summary within the electronic medical record. Exhibits knowledge of lab procedures to include specimen collection, phlebotomy, point of care testing, and use of ABN’s (if applicable in hired practice). Properly processes, packages, and sends specimens to correct laboratory. Obtains preauthorization when needed. Proficient in managing point of care logs and documenting point of care testing accurately in the electronic health record. Follows insurance carrier guidelines and Medicare regulations. Maintains a working knowledge of ICD9 and CPT coding and seeks assistance as needed. Obtains prior authorizations when needed. Schedules tests and specialist visits within network limitations. Supports productivity goals to maximize use of facility resources to meet patient demand. Maximizes physician visits so that productivity targets are met. Assists and contributes to meet quality measures for the organization. Summary GENERAL SUMMARY The Medical Assistant is a multi-skilled individual that works in a healthcare setting to support the non-clinical and clinical functions of the service area. Functions within the Medical Assistant scope of practice and under the direction and continuous supervision of a licensed healthcare provider (MD, NP, RN, LPN) during performance of uncomplicated clinical services and tasks. Reports to department leadership. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provides safe and effective delivery of uncomplicated clinical services and tasks within the Medical Assistant scope of practice only and under the direction and continuous supervision of a licensed health care provider. Provides appropriate clinical and non-clinical information to facilitate visit process. Maintains sterility and cleanliness of the environment. Maintains supplies, equipment and instruments. Supports and performs clerical functions as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Current registration/certification as a Medical Assistant, higher level clinical certification (LPN, RN, or higher), or military medical experience with MA certification/registration required. CPR training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Graduate of an approved accredited allied health program or clinical program. One to two years of experience in a related healthcare field preferred. Must provide record of a completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript for those areas performing complexity testing. WORKING CONDITIONS Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
