Job Summary: The Forensic Nurse Examiner PRN is responsible for the delivery of quality care of the sexually abused patient through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation to public or legal proceedings and the application of forensic health care in the scientific investigation of trauma related to sexual abuse, violence, and criminal activity. This job coordinates with physicians and nursing staff as well as specialty teams of service in the Main ED and throughout JPS Health Network and community to provide the highest standard of forensic health care for the sexually abused patient including participation in the collaborative efforts of the Forensic Program. This position is strictly an on-call role and must be able to report to the hospital within 1 hour of being called and meet the minimum scheduling guidelines and be flexible working with team members to ensure 24/7 coverage. Collaborates with the ED Team Lead as an On-Call FNE to facilitate services and manage flow throughout the designated area of the ED to ensure the forensic patient is expeditiously seen and/or moved into the treatment area and wait time is minimized. Coordinates care by assisting the sexually abused patient with referrals for appropriate medical, psychological, advocacy, and legal follow up as well as accepting referrals throughout the network and from outside agencies scheduling forensic health care appointments. Consults and coordinates with healthcare team members throughout the network to provide comprehensive care and education of this patient population. Assess for mandatory reporting status, report when appropriate, and assist nursing/medical staff with education regarding reporting guidelines. Completes and documents a medical legal history precisely and accurately in a timely manner while maintaining compassion and confidentiality. Utilizes the nursing process to perform a complete and detailed physical evaluation using a trauma-informed approach, collecting evidence and photographing injuries as indicated while maintaining chain of custody and following all departmental, state, and national guidelines. Delivers nursing care to assigned groups of patients to include education directed towards identified knowledge deficits, disease processes, treatment, pain management, medication administration, and discharge/ safety planning while providing emotional support to patients and family members. Interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests to assist the attending provider in identifying the proper plan of care. Maintains professional standards that do not create a conflict of interest with employment or patient care while always ensuring patient/medical record confidentiality. Testifies as a fact witness to any/all cases performed as an expert in the field of forensic nursing.
