Nursing skills gained: Nursing skills gained while working in the OR include learning about aseptic technique, as well as maintaining a sterile field, proper gowning/gloving, and preventing contamination during procedures. Nurses in the OR do patient assessments including preoperative checks, intraoperative hemodynamic monitoring, patient advocacy, and postoperative hand-offs. OR nurses gain surgical instrumentation knowledge such as how to identify and handle instruments, anticipate surgeon needs during procedures and ensure proper sterilization and set up. The RN supports anesthesia by assisting with intubation/emergence, monitoring patient responses to anesthesia, managing airways and helping with lines and equipment. RNs perform proper patient positioning using padding and support to prevent injury and give the surgeon the optimal view of the surgical site.
