Summary This position offers unique experience in our satellite pediatric intensive care unit, for an individual who wishes to pursue a career in pediatric intensive care. The section of Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics is a multidisciplinary team of attending critical care physicians, advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners/physician assistants), committed to the care of patients suffering from a life-threatening illness or injury. The primary clinical site is at Texas Children's West Campus, an extension of the largest pediatric hospital in the United States, and an affiliated hospital of Baylor College of Medicine. Currently, the critical care intensive care units in the community have capacity for 22 patients. The NP/PA will work alongside Faculty colleagues, advanced practice providers, and occasionally pediatric residents in the care of children with chronic and acute illness requiring intensive care in the PICU. At present, the west campus PICU has approximately 1000 admissions per year, with an increasing number requiring assisted ventilation or other advanced support, such as oscillatory ventilation, nitric oxide administration or cardiovascular pressor support. The satellite ICU also provides care for children who require long-term technology support, those with residual PICU morbidities requiring transition to home, and the management of children who require more intensive medical support. Job Purpose Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician. Job Duties Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations. Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient. Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures. Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records. Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician. Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care. Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management. Perform other job related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Nurse Practitioner: Master's degree in in Nursing. Physician Assistant: Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation. He/she must also be able to perform simple mathematical computations with and without the assistance of calculators including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Perform routine admission procedures. Input patient information into the computer by typing on a keyboard all information as required. Must be able to visually read information on a video screen and/or on hard copy and prepare printouts of patient information using a computer and printer. Interview patients for symptoms, side-effects, toxicities, and determine their status pertaining to the investigational aspects of protocols. Calculate drug doses when appropriate. Chart notes. Measure films to monitor disease response. Assess toxicity, grade and make handwritten entries onto flow sheet or database. Assure protocol compliance and assist physicians as necessary.
