Under the general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Nurse Manager is responsible for the safe and effective delivery of patient care on assigned unit. The Nurse Manager organizes and directs the work of nursing staff to assure effective nursing services are provided and quality standards are met. The Nurse Manager must proactively collaborate with the interdisciplinary treatment team to ensure comprehensive care is achieved. The Nurse Manager is responsible for training, development and managing the overall performance of assigned nursing staff. This position is for an adult psychiatric unit

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for development and supervision of assigned staff including selection, performance management, development, disciplinary action and related functions.
  • Delivers psychiatric nursing, general health and nursing care specific to the requirements of the clinical unit or the units’ clinical treatment program.
  • Directs the implementation and evaluation of documentation for the nursing process to ensure the utilization of current standards of nursing practice.
  • Implements and monitors administrative responsibilities of the unit.
  • Manages staff to adhere to the Hospital’s philosophy on non-violent restraint and seclusion.
  • Ensures all staff are promptly and properly oriented to the unit.
  • Protects confidentiality of information in written, electronic and verbal communication per HIPPA law and Hospital policy.
  • Reports potential or actual patient safety concerns, medication errors, and/or near misses. Ensures unit staff adheres to treatment plans and unit schedule, including co-leading groups.
  • Ensures patient education and patient/family knowledge is part of the nursing plan.
  • Maintains patient dignity, patient rights, and patient privacy at all times.
  • Responds to and manages as appropriate potential or actual emergency situations.
  • Ensures all related safety policies, procedures and protocols are followed on unit.
  • Adheres to all Infection Control procedures and ensures procedures are being followed by all staff.
  • Demonstrates conduct in keeping with UHS ethical standards and Code of Conduct.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and commitment to Teamwork at all times.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing required. BSN preferred
  • MA RN License
  • Five (5) or more years of nursing experience, preferably in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
  • Preferred three (3) or more years in a nursing supervisory role.
  • CPR Certificated required
  • Knowledge of abnormal psychology and treatment procedures. Excellent crisis intervention skills. Demonstrated leadership skills including: delegation, staff coaching, employee relations, change facilitation and motivation. Superior ability to manage a milieu.
