Job Description:
The Triage Nurse conducts initial assessments to evaluate how urgently a patient needs care. They ask questions, check vital signs and coordinate care with other medical professionals, such as nurses and physicians.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The primary focus of a Triage Nurse is to ensure that the patients who are most in need of care receive it first and that other members of the care team are ready to begin treatments as quickly as possible. They perform many duties, including:
- Interviewing patients to gather information about their medical history and current symptoms
- Checking patient height, weight, blood pressure and temperature
- Collecting urine samples, throat cultures and other samples as needed to expedite care
- Assigning a triage priority based on the findings of the interview and exam
- Communicating with physicians, nurses and other members of the care team about patients’ statuses
- Updating patient health information systems with notes
- Staying up to date on advancements in emergency medicine and urgent care best practices
- Adhering to standards for infection control, sanitation and patient safety and confidentiality
Education & Experience:
- Completion of nursing training from an accredited school of nursing
- LPN or RN
Experience:
1 – 3 years of professional nursing experience preferred
Other Requirements:
- Current state registered nursing license
- Current CPR certificate (BLS)
- Current appropriate immunizations to work in the health care field
