RN - Poison Center Specialist

Position Highlights:

Nebraska Medicine is seeking a RN - Poison Center Specialist to join our Poison Center team, this role is located in Omaha, NE. The RN – Poison Center Specialist is responsible for answering and managing incoming calls from the public and healthcare providers regarding poison exposures and toxicology concerns, obtaining detailed exposure histories, assessing the severity of each case, and providing evidence-based treatment recommendations using established protocols. The role includes determining the appropriate level of care, facilitating referrals to emergency departments or other healthcare facilities when needed, and conducting follow-up calls to monitor patient outcomes. The specialist documents all case information accurately in the poison center database in accordance with state and national standards, collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals, participates in quality improvement activities, maintains ongoing toxicology education, and works toward or maintains certification as a Certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI).

Job Duties: Poison Center Specialist I

Provide informational assistance by telephone to health care professionals and consumers about poison exposures. Obtain complete histories, assess poisoning severity, and make appropriate treatment recommendations. Refer patients to health care facilities as necessary and contact health care providers to provide treatment recommendations for referred patients.

Required Qualifications: Poison Center Specialist I

  Minimum of two years nursing experience in a patient-care setting OR a minimum of one year experience working as a poison information provider/specialist in poison information required.

  Associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) or Nursing Diploma required.

  Ability to perform prolonged mental concentration to read and gather information required.

  Skill in typing and use of computer required.

  Ability to perform complex math calculations required.

  Ability to communicate effectively with the public and health care professionals required.

  Ability to work a flexible schedule, including day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts, including on call shifts, as assigned required.

• Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Nebraska required.

  Required to take the American Association of Poison Control Centers Certification Exam for Specialists in Poison Information (CSPI) when eligible and required to pass the exam within three administrations after meeting the eligibility criteria.

  Maintenance of certification by successfully completing the CSPI examination every seven years required.

Preferred Qualifications: Poison Center Specialist I

•  Critical care nursing experience preferred.

  Previous experience working as a Poison Center Specialist preferred.

  Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) or Master’s degree in nursing, public health, or related field preferred.
