Job Title: RN/LPN - Labor & Delivery; FT, Weekend Option, Nights 7pm-7am

Supervised by: Nurse Manager

Job Summary:Provides direct patient care in the Labor and Delivery setting. Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including fetal monitoring and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Performs general nursing duties in all Maternal-Child Health departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement activities.
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
  • Able to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to AHA/AAP guidelines. Ability to conduct antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum assessments.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring. Identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately.
  • Ability to assess presenting part by Leopold Maneuver and/or digital exam.
  • Ability to assess fetal cardiac activity with ultrasound transducer and contraction activity with Toco transducer.
  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
  • Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age.
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to level licensure.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patient population served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to Nurse Manager, co-workers and physicians.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with Social Service/Discharge Planner regarding both in hospital and post discharge needs.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

Requirements

Regulatory Requirements

  • Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation Certification and Basic to Intermediate fetal monitoring course.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current state Registered Nurse Licensure, within state of practice.
  • Current BLS certification.

Language Skills:

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.

Skills:

  • Basic computer knowledge.

Physical Demands:

Shall ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed. • Shall perform administrative duties that may include maintaining statistical records of his or her clinical workload, participating in medical educations programs, and participating in quality improvement functions and other duties as prescribed by the Flight Commander.• May be asked to participate/direct committees, programs or clinical services directly related to area of clinical responsibility or privileges.• Shall attend and participate in meetings, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities such as, but not limited to the following: quality improvement meetings, professional staff meetings, commander's staff meetings, flight meetings, and other meetings required by applicable regulations, MTF guidance, or as directed by the flight Commander or his/her designated representative.• Shall possess knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform nursing assignments of moderate difficulty and experience in assessing pediatric, adolescent, and adults as appropriate. Utilizes the nursing process as a basis for professional practice.• Shall possess basic knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders/conditions and disease processes across the lifespan, as appropriate.• Shall possess knowledge of preventive health schedules, procedures, processes, and education methods.• Shall possess basic knowledge of disease management and population health principles.• Shall possess knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required. Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care.• Shall possess basic knowledge of operating a wide variety of medical equipment/non-medical equipment to ensure patient and staff safety, proper equipment maintenance and accessibility.• Shall possess basic knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient’s condition including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care. • Shall possess ability to acquire and use basic computer skills to enter patient data and extract patient’s information, from a variety of sources to include Genesis, Essentris, ASIMS, AMWITS, Humana TRICARE, and Integrated Clinical Database (ICDB).• Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as appropriate. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: * Degree/Education: Shall be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing and have taken NCLEX-PN boards and passed. * Experience: Employment in the nursing field within the last 12 months is mandatory and at least 2 years of active clinical nursing practice in an inpatient environment. * Licensure: Active/unrestricted LPN/LVN license from any state. * Life Support Certifications: Possess current ARC or AHA BLS certification. Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, Emotional support program (S.T.A.B.L.E) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) will need to be completed within 6 months of hire. * Certification : Contractor must provide documentation/certification of IV therapy training from one or more of the following educational alternatives: Post-graduate level course, Credit for Previous Education or Nontraditional Education * Security: Possess ability to pass a background check/security clearance.
