JOB RESPONSIBILLITIES:

All duties are performed under the direct supervision of Surgical Technologist or Registered Nurse:

Performs technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring that proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards of process.

Provides proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.

Follows aseptic technique. Proactively identifies contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique and implements corrective actions. Reviews preference cards and makes proper selection of appropriate supplies and equipment for surgical procedures assigned. Accountable for supplies, equipment, and environmental support in a cost-effective manner. Actively participates in the planning and set up of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes in an organized manner to provide optimal accessibility during the procedure.

Identifies specimens for processing by circulating nurse.   Counts instruments, sharps, and sponges, before, during and after surgery. Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization. Removes soiled instruments and equipment appropriately. 

Recognizes, intervenes, and reports situations which impede patient safety.  Safeguards the privacy of patients. Maintains confidentially relating to patients. 

Maintains stock in operating room supply carts as needed.   Recognizes and reports problems related to kits, equipment, or supplies. Contributes to cleanliness and order of the unit. Facilitates efficient turnover time by prioritizing activities related to equipment and instrumentation needed for cases to follow in assigned room.

Ensures patient comfort and safety measures are maintained.

Assists the surgeon during a surgical procedure with a high degree of efficiency, anticipating physician and patient needs during the case. Assists the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient’s anatomy and abnormalities which affect the surgical procedure.

Assists in daily maintenance of the department, in completing work assignments, restocking, pulling cases for the next day and maintaining equipment in good working order. Utilizes non-chargeable items in a cost-effective manner. 

Assists the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.

Follows all appropriate procedures to decontaminate, sterilize, and disinfect equipment and instruments. Correctly assembles and wraps/packages items. Prepares items in an organized and timely manner. Operates the autoclave unit appropriately and performs high level disinfection processes. 

Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Must be currently enrolled and actively completing coursework in an accredited surgical technologist program. Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist must be obtained within 12 months of program completion. BLS or CPR for Healthcare Providers certification required. Direct patient care/clinical experience preferred.
