Patient Care Nursing Assistants in the Presurgical Unit are responsible for performing various duties assisting in the care of adult, geriatric, and sometimes adolescent and newborn patients assigned by the registered nurse including the care of complex patients. Some of your daily responsibilities will include helping with transporting patients from the floors, setting up patients in the pre-surgical area, cleaning carts, changing linens, monitoring blanket temperature and saline warmers and obtaining, delivering and returning blood products. You will have the opportunity to deliver exceptional care and enhance each patient’s experience.  

 

A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed). Hours may vary from 5:00AM – 6:30PM. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfers or emergencies. 

  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.  

  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight, and height. 

  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction, removing urinary foley catheters and other therapeutic measures.  

  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 

  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. 

  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 

  • Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area in timely manner. 

  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.  

  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.  

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire or within new hire period 

  • Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills 

  • Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered 

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) 

  • One year of recent acute care experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking. Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
