Job Summary

Collaborates with the physician and healthcare team in the delivery of patient care, utilizing the nursing process. Provides professional nursing care to patients, including conducting nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. MHHS hires RNs based on years of experience groupings (i.e. newly licensed RN [working under the supervision of RN clinical preceptor], less than 1 year, 1-3 years, 3 to 10 and 10+).

Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing; Bachelors of Nursing preferred

License/Certifications:

Current State of Texas license or temporary/compact license to practice professional nursing
Certified in Basic Life Support
Additional certifications may be required based on discipline and/or nursing unit requirements

Principal Accountabilities

Delivers safe and appropriate care to patients, according to the nursing skills inventory and the age and needs of the patient/population served.
Coordinates the planning for the delivery of nursing care with an interdisciplinary team and administers appropriate clinical decisions in the delivery of patient care.
Collaborates with, directs, and may delegate to the healthcare team in the attainment of positive outcomes based on data, research, evidence, and professional standards of care.
Coordinates treatment plans; develops/implements discharge and/or transfer plans.
Participates in a systemic, interdisciplinary, and ongoing evaluation of programs, process improvement and desired client-centered outcomes.
Adheres to all regulatory and Texas Board of Nursing standards.
Considers the diverse needs of each patient through the entire continuum of care, providing and ensuring the highest level of service according to established service standards, optimizing the patient experience.
Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards, being a good steward of resources, including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; may serve as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

About the Role The PAT/ PreOp/ PACU RN is responsible to handle inbound pre-operative patients to ensure patients receive quality pre-operative screening for our surgical procedures and Post anesthetic care patients emerging from the haze of anesthesia. There are several tasks a PACU nurse needs to perform in a post-operative unit such as guiding patients to consciousness and assisting them in handling personal needs in the first few hours after surgery. A PAT / PreOp / PACU nurse is important not just for their role as a guide in the outcome of a surgery but also for handling medication administration duties which are very important at this stage. Even though most patients do not remember the PAT / PreOp / PACU nurse that attended to their needs, they play an imperative role in helping patients start on the road to recovery. POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Pre-admissions Testing Nurse Duties: Pre-admission testing nurse or PAT nurse duties include overseeing intake, during which you perform an initial physical assessment and interview the patient to obtain their medical history. PAT duties include performing any tests the surgeon has ordered, such as an EKG, and may be expected to draw blood for lab work. PAT nurses are often among the first people patients deal with as they prepare to have surgery. The PAT nurse is expected to help patients understand the process, answer any questions they might have, and discuss their post-surgical care plan with them. Preoperative Duties of Nurse: Manage patients’ admission processes to preoperative department in a hospital. Assess the status of patients’ health in pre-op and ensure accuracy of identification wristband. Ensure that operative and informed consents are in order. Determine the surgeon and procedure being carried out. Take and record vital statistics of patients to ensure readiness for surgical procedure. Initiate IVs and ensure that patients are informed about the procedure and attending medical staff. Post-operative Duties of PACU Nurse: Assess patients’ condition after a surgery has been performed.
