Surgical Technologist/Scrub Tech The Surgical Technologist scrubs for surgical procedures and demonstrates competence while functioning as a member of the surgical team. Maintains a sterile field during surgical procedures. Prepares supplies, instruments, and equipment related to these procedures. Supports the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the Surgery Center. Supports and participates in quality improvement activities. Education and Experience requirements High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program (*see substitution below). Current Surgical Technologist Certification is required within one year from the date of graduation from a surgical technologist program or have been employed as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility on or before July 1st, 2013 or have successfully completed a training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service (MA Senate Bill 2058, December 2012). Graduates who have not obtained their certification will have one year from the date of graduation from a surgical technologist program to obtain their certification. Under the direction of the RN circulator as dictated by the standards in the Medicare Conditions of Participation for surgical services, assists surgical teams during operative procedures in scrubbing for all physicians in assigned services. Arranges and inventories sterile set up for operations. Assists in preparing moving and positioning patients. Performs sterile scrub procedures and related activities such as preparation and draping the patient and operative area. Passes instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies in accordance with hospital policy and procedure. Participates in the turnover of operating rooms. $3,000.00 Sign-on Bonus I. Major Responsibilities: 1. Demonstrates proficiency in the scrub role in all assigned cases. Scrubs with all surgeons in assigned service areas. 2. Prepares the Operating Room for cases. Selects and checks case cart and preference cards for correct instrument pan(s), packs, sterile supplies and additional items needed for the case according to the procedure and surgeon preference card. Performs surgical count with circulating nurse according to established policy. 3. Responds to needs of surgeon and other team members. Assists operative team and anticipates needs of the surgeon and/or assistants during cases including the need for special equipment and supplies. Remains constantly observant of the operative field, recognizing emergency situations and performs emergency procedures as directed. Utilizes a variety of OR equipment such as microscopes, CUSA, steam sterilizers, suction, compressed air/gas, etc. 4. Passes and tracks instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures. Labels all medication and solutions on sterile field. Monitors sponges, needles and instruments throughout the case. Cares for specimens to prevent loss or damage. Uses caution when handling specimens to ensure proper anatomical identification. 5. Assists in completing procedures. Participates in closing counts at appropriate times, sponge and needle count at change of shift according to the count policy. Assists in the application of dressing and/or cast. Assists with transferring patient from OR table to stretcher/bed when appropriate. 6. Prepares operating room and supplies for subsequent cases. Communicates with others to facilitate the timely turnover of operating rooms. Assures all sharps from back table are disposed of properly in biohazard sharps receptacle. Participates in cleaning, decontamination and sterilizing instruments and equipment. Turns over back table and gathers appropriate supplies and equipment for subsequent cases. 7. Follows the Code of Ethics and Business Conduct policy and actively contributes to maintaining a positive work environment for patients, patients’ families/friends, visitors, co-workers, medical staff and customer groups. 8. Participates in the maintenance and rotation of stock for the department 9. Participates in maintaining cleanliness of the department. II. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Thorough knowledge of a specialized and technical field of Surgical Technology. Successful completion of an accredited school of surgical technology without having obtained the required surgical technologist certification as of the date of hire, or successful completion of an appropriate program of surgical technology in the Armed services of the United States Public Health Service. 2. New Surgical Technologist (non-certified) employees will, if eligible, obtain a surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized surgical technologist certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists within one year of graduation as a condition of employment. 3. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) is required upon hire or must be obtained within 30 days of their hire. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Experience/Skills: Required: Graduate of an accredited program (Associate’s Degree program after 5/2025) and obtains certification within 12 months of graduation Obtains Lean Six Sigma: White belt Ability to first scrub for basic procedures in 2-3 service lines Ability to problem solve in relation to procedure being performed Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology and pharmacology for optimal patient care Applies basic knowledge of computers, electricity and robotics Demonstrates knowledge and practice of patient care concepts Applies principles of sterile technique during surgical procedures as well as in room and case set up Participates in orientation and training to attain competency in more complex cases.
