In addition, this unit administers chemotherapy to treat solid tumor patients admitted to the hospital with an emphasis on treating sarcoma patients. This unit is home to an innovative palliative care service with trained staff and multidisciplinary resources. There are two dedicated Comfort Care Suites for terminally-ill patients where a low-tech, high comfort environment is provided. These suites provide accommodations for family and friends to remain with patients around the clock. Cultural traditions around dying are actively supported. The nurse plays an integral role in the Palliative Care team which includes Attending physicians, fellows, residents, medical students, social workers and chaplain services. In addition to Palliative Care, nurses on this unit attend 16 hours of End-of-Life Care education and complete Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification after approximately 6 months to a year on the unit. The NCI-Designation recognizes the scientific leadership, resources, and the depth and breadth of the research in basic, clinical and population science. As a Comprehensive Cancer Center, we demonstrate the added depth and breadth of research as well as substantial transdisciplinary research that bridges these scientific areas. The clinical services encompass adult and pediatric tumors across three campuses as well as regional satellite locations. The clinical cancer program is one of the largest clinical services at UCSF Medical Center and encompasses roughly 230 non-physician FTEs, 90+ cost center, and dozens of grant and philanthropic funding sources.
