Responsibilities* Personnel Management Provides supervision, counsel, performance management, and completes performance evaluation for nursing with feedback from the senior nursing director, medical faculty, peer groups, and other ACU leaders. Creates job postings, recruits, interviews and selects nurses. Works collaboratively with triad leadership team in the hiring process. Manages the process for staffing/scheduling and vacation time of nursing staff. Manages the orientation and competency evaluation of new hires. Connects individually with each employee, increasing employee engagement scores and satisfaction. Clinical Practice Serves as a role model, mentor and expert resource to nursing and assistive staff in the provision of direct patient care. Provides leadership for the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of nursing practice and interdisciplinary clinical guidelines. Facilitates and supports a nursing practice environment in which empowerment, responsibility, autonomy, accountability, collaboration and peer review are exercised. Develops standard processes and protocols to minimize variation, support efficient workflows, and confirm the right work is performed by the right role. Support of Clinical Operations Participates in planning and problem-solving of daily unit operations and priorities of patient services. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of unit goals and objectives. Manages, directly and in collaboration with others, staffing, scheduling, benchmarking, work redesign and variances. Organizes and facilitates unit based educational activities and in-services. Assures compliance with regulatory programs' standards related to the nursing. Provides leadership, assists and advises Administrators, Medical Directors, in satisfying other regulatory standards. Interprets and implements University and Health System policies and procedures. Assists in the planning and implementation of new or expanded services and programs. Provides interface and liaison communications regarding programs external to the unit which have implications for nursing staff. Represents nursing, Ambulatory Care Services and/or the clinical department(s) or unit(s) on assigned committees Quality Management and Research Participates in and conducts the analysis of data, assists in the development of strategies to improve care management within the area or unit. Participates in and supports the involvement of nursing staff in patient (HEDIS, paid for performance) and ACU quality improvement metrics/activities. Provides leadership to staff in understanding and applying quality improvement principles and adoption of evidence-based changes in practice into daily work. Promotes the integration of research findings into clinical practice. Supports research activities on the unit, as indicated. Professional Development and Education Facilitates the education of health sciences students. Responsibilities* 5D Surgical Intensive Care Unit: The SICU is a 20 bed adult intensive care unit caring for patients who have had major operations or those experiencing complications requiring extensive physiological monitoring. Typically this encompasses those patients with peripheral vascular diseases, cancer, hepatic, pancreatic or renal failure, cardiac and pulmonary disease. Often these patients present with multi-system failure requiring swan ganz monitoring, ventilator support, parenteral nutrition and fluid and electrolyte corrections. In addition, SICU receives adult liver transplants and is a major referral center for adult ECMO/Respiratory failure patients. This ICU also may receive overflow from the Trauma, Neuro, Medicine and Cardiac Intensive Care Units. SICU charge nurses participate as adult Rapid Response Providers through out the University Hospital. SICU offers 12 hour night shifts, comprehensive orientation, career development and the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population.
