Job Summary #CA-MM City Sacramento Job Summary To provide independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis. This includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and specialty protocols (e.g. chemotherapy) as defined by standardized procedures or independently based on licensure. This may include non-invasive or invasive procedures, surgical procedures, including operative first assist per approved standardized procedures as identified by the list available on the Medical Staff Office. Patient management decisions are independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. NPs are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff. Department Specific Job Scope The role of the night PNP in the PICU/PCICU includes primarily caring for the PCICU patients, however also includes caring for the PICU patients overnight in collaboration with the PICU attending, PICU fellow and rotating PICU resident. The PNP will provide initial patient evaluation, ordering and interpretation of diagnostic tests, initiation of appropriate treatments and medications using established protocols and practices. In addition, the role will include: interaction with medical/surgical and cardiac patients; consultation with other providers; communication with patients and families; admission/transfer/discharge planning; documentation of care. With appropriate credentials and privileges, the PNP may also perform invasive procedures (e.g., placement of central venous and arterial catheters, endotracheal intubation) within their defined scope of practice. The PNP will also provide education to patients, family members, ICU members, and medical providers including medical students, residents, and fellow physicians. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU); is a 36-bed unit across 2 locations. We provide family centered, multidisciplinary care for critically ill patients ranging from infancy through young adult. We utilize advanced therapies and equipment to care for patients with rare diseases, post liver and kidney transplants, Level 1 Traumas, and complex medical/surgical cases. Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience 1+ year experience as an RN. Pediatric ICU experience preferred. Broad knowledge of patient care principles and equipment; CHLA patient care policies and procedures. Ability to assess effectiveness of patient care; maintain a calm demeanor and assist in crises and emergencies; prioritize tasks for complex patient care; communicate tactfully, professionally and effectively, verbally and in writing. Education/Licensure/Certification Associate Degree in Nursing required, BSN preferred. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California and American Heart Association CPR/BLS/PALS certification required.
