Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nurse (WOCN)

Under the general direction of the Sr. Director of Inpatient Services, is a consultant for wound, fistula management, ostomy continence care and education. The WOCN is a resource for the ordering and proper utilization of specialty pressure redistribution products. Works within the framework of the State Nurse Practice Act and follows all hospital policies and procedures. Complies with the hospital and nursing standards in the performance of the job duties and responsibilities. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse is responsible for providing the educational resources necessary to prepare and maintain the competencies of the unit based direct care staff for the provision of safe, quality patient care, in accordance with Hospital policy and standards. S/he contributes to increasing Nursing’s body of knowledge and improving standards of nursing care. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse collaborates with other health care professionals in coordinating patient-focused care that is seamless, cost effective and outcome oriented. Job Description Required Skills/Qualifications/Training/Experience: Minimum of 5-10 years of current clinical experience Must possess a sound knowledge of nursing principles, procedures, and standards of practice as determined by state and federal regulations. Minimum 2 – 5 years of educational experience in an acute care or academic organization or demonstrated expertise in a clinically equivalent role. Proficiency in communication skills (both written and verbal) Demonstrated experience in clinical teaching Knowledge of evidence-based clinical research current findings and resources Knowledge of process improvement strategies Demonstrated ability and effective organizational skills to coordinate and manage projects/departmental initiatives Experience with data collection and interpretation of quality performance measures Ability to function and multi-task in a dynamic environment Leadership and management competence Demonstrates clinical competence Positive interpersonal communication skills and good organizational skills Preferred Skills/Qualifications/Training/Experience: Educational Requirements: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required MSN Preferred Graduate of a WOCN accredited WOC Nursing Education Program License/Certification: Current RN licensure in MA WOCN Certification CPR Certification Age Specific Criteria: Ability to effectively communicate to all age levels served within the scope of the position/assigned areas.
