General Description of the Job Class This job classification is used for the Nursing Care Assistant Float Pool managed by ISRP. The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care support partner with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and performs work as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provides direct care to patients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. The individual in this position is expected to perform basic care and comfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient population needs in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected to assist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individual is expected to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacy of every patient and family, and to respect cultural differences during patient care. They are expected to know and adhere to all basic policies and procedures and respond appropriately during emergency situations. They are expected to maintain the patient/family environment, perform general unit upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and order supplies as needed, with or without direct supervision. The NA is expected to use accurate verbal and written communication and to document patient care appropriately in the electronic health record. Duties and Responsibilities of this Level Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures and provide manual assistance as required. Obtain and record patient data for medical records noting and informing RN/LPN of information collected. Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including, but not limited to, feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nail care, bed-making, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination; provide such additional care as required to meet the personal needs and comfort of assigned patients. Participate in teaching activities by reinforcing teaching instructed by RN and/or providers as needed. Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helping position patients, changing non-sterile dressing and weighing patients. Take and record vital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags. Note and report any changes in patient's condition. Turn and position patients, set up and feed patients as necessary, provide patients with fresh drinking water. Perform fingersticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriate training, document and notify RN/LPN. Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients. Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required. Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests on patient specimens. Clean assigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required. Participate in own professional development by maintaining required skills validation and attending educational offerings. Support the development of other staff and formal learners. May also perform clean dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old. Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein. The UNC Medical Center Float Pool is a staffing pool for outpatient and procedural areas. We provide staff for approximately 166 clinics, the majority of which are in Chapel Hill. Individuals must be willing to commute to Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Hillsborough, Burlington, and Greensboro for their shifts. Schedules are made based on clinic needs, therefore clinic assignments can vary day-to-day, giving you an opportunity to experience a variety of specialties and teams! Our staff is expected to work both on campus (in the hospital) and at off-campus clinics. Employees are per diem and are compensated with flat hourly rates. Teammates in these roles do not qualify for PTO, FMLA, or health insurance. Individuals are expected to work a minimum of 6-eight (8) hour shifts per 6 week scheduling period and must be available to work at least 1 Monday and 1 Friday per month and an additional Monday OR Friday. Partial shifts are not available, individuals must be able to work a full 8-hour shift. We have enough shifts to work as much as 40 hours per week. Operational and Fiscal Management - Establishes and promotes standards of excellence for areas of responsibility and ensures consistent implementation by staff. Provides input about trends related to program development, space needs and fiscal realities. Ensures appropriate and adequate clinical staffing and skill mix to meet patient care needs on own shift and upcoming shift. Effectively uses clinical and financial information to assist Nurse Manager to establish and meet budgetary goals. Collaborates with Nurse Manager to implement strategies to increase revenue and cost-effectively manage personnel, supply and equipment resources. Evaluates the impact of strategic fiscal changes on quality outcomes. Assists Nurse Manager to ensure that internal and external regulatory standards are met or exceeded. 5. Research and Performance Improvement - Collaborates with Nurse Manager to evaluate research that is applicable to practice and promotes changes in standards of care as appropriate. Guides research development and implementation. Utilizes resources in asking research questions and applying appropriate research methods Shares knowledge with colleagues through publication, presentations or other means .Develops, implements and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting goals. Approximately 2000 babies are born each year at UNC Health Johnston. Over a thousand patients are also seen in its triage area. The unit consists of 13 labor and delivery rooms, 4 triage rooms, and 2 operating rooms across our 2 campuses Smithfield and Clayton. Anesthesia coverage is provided 24/7.
