Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse Location: School Based Pay Grade: Unified Salary Scale U130 Work Calendar: 189 Days FLSA Status: Non-Exempt GENERAL PURPOSE Under the supervision of the Building Administrator and School Nurse and with direction from one or more teachers, the Licensed Practical Nurse works closely with one or several pupils who are identified as having specific medical needs. The Licensed Practical Nurse may also assist in health screenings, immunization clinics, and daily clinic activities. MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist the School Nurse Assist with daily student health care needs under direction of the school nurse. Assist with hygiene and personal care needs of students. Provide emergency care and first responder services in conjunction with the school nurse. Collaborate with staff in planning the student's education program and corresponding health services needs plan. Assist with health treatments as requested/trained by the school nurse. Participate in annual training of medication administration, diabetes education, asthma and allergy and worker's compensation. Assist school nurse with documentation, health office and other clerical functions. Provide assistance to the students Assist with daily activities of living to include transporting of students in order to support IEP/504, IHCP and classroom activities. Perform vision and hearing, and scoliosis screenings as well as related tasks. Administer medications, as delegated by school nurse. Provide first aid to students, provide nursing interventions for acute/chronic illnesses, and provide emergency care under the supervision of the school nurse. Support and demonstrate core values of Stafford Schools Engage in ongoing professional development relevant to position. Respond promptly and thoroughly to written and oral requests for information. Maintain a clean, neat appearance, appropriate to position. Maintain a record of appropriate attendance and punctuality. Serve as a role model for students, colleagues, and the general public. Licensed Practical Nurse (required). Certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED. Must hold a valid Virginia Driver's License. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge Basic health care practices and medication administration (including schedule II-VI drugs), diabetes, asthma and allergy, and safety issues with respect to current nursing practice. The Level II Competent Registered Nurse assumes the accountability and responsibility as a professional nurse for providing total, comprehensive, continuous, and patient-centered care for an assigned group of patients. The RN is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Job Summary: The Medical Assistant controls patient flow for providers, obtains and documents patient vitals, and performs other patient care and clerical duties. Essential Functions & Responsibilities: Greets and escorts patients to exam room in a timely and courteous manner. Reviews patient chart to ensure all reports and results required by provider are available prior to exam/treatment. Obtains reports and results as required. Obtains and documents patient chief complaint. Obtains and documents patient vitals (i.e., height, weight, BP). Ensures exam/procedure room is appropriately supplied and set up to accommodate encounter based upon reason for patient visit. Reviews patient-supplied history forms for completeness. Queries to obtain missing information within parameters established by supervising provider. Assists providers with examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments. Draws blood and/or assists in obtaining other specimens. Prepares and routes specimen(s) to laboratories; utilizing in-house services whenever appropriate; following verification of patients’ insurance. Documents all activities/interventions, patient/family responses, medication prescribed, etc., in the medical record. Communicates with patients regarding provider advice/instructions within scope of training. Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines, and confidentiality policies. Phones in prescriptions to pharmacies based upon provider’s written orders. Provides results and other information to patients as specifically directed by provider. Assists patient with the scheduling of future appointments, surgeries, and/or diagnostic testing, as necessary. The Medical Assistant is not authorized to interpret reports or results or independently dispense medical advice to patients. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Must be certified Medical Assistant. In lieu of certification at hire, must have successfully completed a medical assistant training program or have two years of experience as a Medical Assistant (eq. Army Medic, Navy Corpsman) at hire. For those that have completed a medical assistant training program or have two years of experience, must obtain Medical Assistant certification within 18 months of hire. Incumbents hired before March 2021 may be considered grandfathered in terms of education. Should an incumbent obtain the Medical Assistant certification, it would be considered a requirement of their role moving forward. AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire. Proficiency in basic clinical skills as required by specialty (i.e. phlebotomy, blood pressure, EKG, injections) required. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality required. Minimum of 2 years’ prior experience providing clinical support in a medical office setting preferred. Electronic Medical Records experience preferred.
