Change bed linens, diapers and clothing as often as necessary. • Do not permit residents to smoke in bed. • Assure that the nurse’s call system is attached to the bed and within easy reach at all times when residents are bedfast. • Answer residents’ call lights promptly. • Check for food in residents’ room. Keep dentures clean and soaked with Efferdent after dinner. • Record resident’s food and nourishment intake as directed. • Perform after meal care as required – cleaning resident’s hands, face, clothing, dentures, etc. • Assist residents to/from bathroom. Offer bedfast residents bedpans and urinals. Clean and store such equipment after each use (document Intake and Output as directed). • Check and document bowel movements and character of stools every shift. • Bathe residents as assigned and in accordance with established facility procedures (encourage showers and other self-help measures/activities). • Comb and brush resident’s hair daily. Shampoo hair on shower days. • Clip and trim fingernails. • Shave male residents daily or as needed. • Keep hair under arms and face on female residents clean-shaven as necessary or instructed. Trim hair in nose and ears as needed. • Observe and report the presence of reddened areas on bony prominences. • Keep drainage bag off the floor when resident is in bed or in wheelchair. • Apply Vaseline or A & D ointment to dry skin in accordance with established policies. • Move and turn bedfast residents at least every two hours and record such information on CNA notes. • Observe disoriented and comatose residents and notify Charge Nurse immediately. • Apply postural support properly. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Estimated The primary job duties this position is responsible for achieving are listed in order of importance. Collaborates with Nursing Director of MCH, NICU Manager and staff to assess learning and development needs of nursing staff including the evaluation of staff clinical abilities, and makes recommendations to Nursing Director. Develops individual teaching plans and provides direct education for specific patient population. Assists in designing and instruction about patient care delivery systems in collaboration with the NICU Manager and Nursing Director of MCH. Plans, coordinates, evaluates and designs orientation tailored to the educational needs of the staff. Consistently plans and organizes orientation programs for the needs of new hires. Plans and develops appropriate educational programs for staff. Insures quality of patient care by developing, monitoring, and evaluating clinical protocols, standards of care and practice, policies and procedures. Assists in coordinating educational programs Maintains teaching materials, education tools and files on all programs. Assists in the communication of revised patient care procedures to the patient care staff and new employee Coordinates in-service sessions to implement and inform the staff of new products and equipment as necessary Utilizes new information and/or research findings in developing and updating the content of programs and specific teaching activities Develops and implements formal and informal education programs and unit specific orientation programs to meet identified needs of nursing staff. Collaborates with clinical and administrative colleagues for the development and implementation of joint educational projects to meet identified nursing service needs Assist in developing evidence based clinical policies and procedures in conjunction with the NICU Manager and Director of MCH. Educates the interdisciplinary team in evidence based protocols and standards of care related to patient populations. Functions as a resource person for staff members on complex patients Assures clinical competencies of nursing staff through educational programs and evaluation processes Provides oversight of comprehensive primary caregiver education tools Identifies and communicates learning opportunities available for unit level staff within the hospital and community Assures responsibility for special projects as assigned Understands and implements the current TJC, CCS and Title 22 requirements for nursing personnel Collaborates with the NICU Manager for data entry in the CPQCC and completion of the annual CCS Report. Reviews Policy and Procedure Manuals to maintain a complete understanding and compliance of hospital regulation and new evidence based information. Observes hospital and department standard operation procedures in precautions for transmission of infectious diseases and the handling and use of hazardous substances.
