How you make a difference The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (Psych NP) follows established policies and procedures and state guidelines, ensuring compliance with supervision requirements through proper documentation. They provide psychiatric consultation, diagnostic, treatment, and medication management services to patients, including crisis intervention services. Overall, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner plays a vital role in providing quality mental health care to patients. Key Responsibilities Conducts comprehensive assessments, implements and evaluates individualized plans of care, and monitors medication and treatment protocols in accordance with established policies and procedures and state guidelines. Documents all relevant patient care issues, including observations and interventions, in progress notes and treatment plans that are problem-oriented, legible, and compliant with documentation requirements. Provides individualized care and treatment that is culturally sensitive and age-appropriate, and participates in the psychiatric on-call schedule if required. Adheres to established formulary procedures for therapeutic regimens, and supports standards of psychiatric care through adherence to policies and procedures for admission and transfer, utilization review, and referrals. Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual judgments and actions, and provides input into mandatory committees as requested by superiors. Qualifications & Requirements Education Graduation from an accredited nurse practitioner program. Experience Two (2) years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner. Psychiatric experience preferred and/or experience in a residential healthcare institution. Licenses/Certifications Certification as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in the state of practice highly desired. Must maintain CPR certification, and any other certifications (such as First Aid) required by contract. How you make a difference The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Health Services Administrator, Program Manager, or higher medical professional. They assist the Physician in all medical care and treatment of the inmate population, including behavioral health disorders. The role includes coordinating the patient plan of care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in compliance with all agency, local, state, and federal laws and regulations. Key Responsibilities • Respond to and deliver care according to protocols and procedures.• Evaluate and treat patients for acute care and emergency medicine complaints based on standardized procedures and protocols.• Consult with a physician for conditions outside protocol parameters and identify patients who require transfer to an Emergency Department.• Assess patients' medical, traumatic, and psychiatric issues and document all findings using the S.O.A.P method and EMR.• Participate in Quality Management and Peer Review activities, attend administrative meetings, and provide clinical support for other services as needed. Order and arrange transfer of residents to acute care facilities as indicated, including provision of written consultation and telephone call to receiving ED. Provide end-of-shift sign out to nursing and medical staff. Make rounds to ensure that all residents are seen at least one time per shift. In partnership with nurse supervisor, take active role in education, support, and guidance of staff. Meet with parents, physicians, other staff, and/or administration as needed. Maintain knowledge base through continuing professional education programs and provide documentation to medical staff office.
