VIEW JOB

If you’re looking for hospice nurse jobs, you’re in the right place. Hospice nurses are part of a tight-knit interdisciplinary team that helps care for a patient who is at the end of their life.

Among their duties, hospice nurses may help manage a patient’s pain and other medical symptoms, offer psychosocial support and comfort, and educate family members on how to care for the patient. The work most often takes place in a patient’s home, but nurses can also perform this role to patients in freestanding hospice centers or hospitals.

Hospice Nurse Education and Skills

Hospice nursing jobs will have you caring for patients who have declined curative treatments for their condition. A hospice nurse job may require you to have a minimum number of years of acute care experience as a registered nurse to qualify for the position. Not only will this background hone your nursing skills, but it will also expose you to a wide range of patients and medical conditions. The five most common diagnoses for hospice patients are:

  • Dementia (including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s)
  • Respiratory illness
  • Circulatory/heart illness
  • Stroke
  • Cancer

You’ll also need to be an effective communicator who exhibits the following:

  • Compassion
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Empathy
  • Honesty
  • Patience

Additionally, you may want to consider certifications such as Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) and Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (ACHPN) that can help you stand out when you apply to hospice jobs.

Hospice Nurse Resume and Cover Letter

Before you begin applying to hospice jobs for nurses, take time to carefully review a job ad that interests you. Then tailor your resume to that individual ad. For example, if the employer is seeking an RN who can bring their “organizational skills and knowledge of in-home care” to the job, put that phrase in your hospice nurse resume. Doing this can show the hiring manager that your skills align with those required for the role.

In your cover letter for hospice nurse jobs, you can tell a story that shows how you used those skills on the job and saw positive results. You’ll also want to elaborate on what draws you to this particular nursing job in hospice care.

Interviewing for Hospice Nursing Jobs

A job interview is your opportunity to show employers why you’re the best nurse for the job. Take some time to go over common nursing interview questions and answers so that you feel prepared well in advance. Remember to highlight how your values and strengths align with the particular hospice job at hand.

Ways of Working

Hospice employment is available full time, part time, on contract, temporary, and per diem. Additionally, you can choose to work for a hospital, hospice facility, or in a home setting. No matter how or where you decide to provide your services, you’ll be expected to bring your whole self to the job.

Salary for Hospice Nursing Jobs

The average annual salary for a staff hospice RN is around $83,000 per year. Your base salary will depend on a number of factors including your education, years of experience, where you work, and the facility employing you.
